It may be a basic question, but rather i prefer to ask here.

Arun,

That's both good news and a surprise! I didn't realize laptops had autosensing Ethernet adapters. What model are the two laptops, and if the Ethernet adapters aren't the built-in ones, what model are the adapters?

That information will help anyone else that's trying to connect machines directly to each other.

You should be able to connect the two laptops using a crossover cable (NIC to NIC).  Assign a different fixed IP to each, i.e 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and a netmask of 255.255.255.0

actaully u dont even need a crossover cable, all u need is a ethernet cable...do the same as above, except this time juss add a gateway address... this has to be the same for both laptops...

Thanks for the correction.  I always did it with the cross over, I never tryed with a straight cable, live and learn.

See this set of cable pinout diagrams. Note that a crossover cable will connect the transmit pair on one machine to the receive pair on the other machine. Unless the machine connectors support "autosensing", a crossover cable will be needed.

See this USB FAQ, specifically Q5 and Q6.  The short answer is, apparently, "no", unless you have a USB bridge.  Trying it without a bridge could destroy both PCs.

My two laptop models are
1) Dell Latitude D600 (Gigabyte Ethernet) -- Win 2K Pro
