Corrupt file or directory in windows/system32

Question

My Dell 4600 gives me an error message every time I start up my computer. The message reads,'The file or directory\Windows\System32\WBEM\logs\wbemess.log is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.' This happens everytime I start up Windows XP. I'm also wondering if this could be why the computer is running so slow.

I assume chkdsk ran when you rebooted the PC?   Run chkdsk again, this time tick both boxes. It may run for a long time upon reboot, be patient.

OK, now do a disk defragment. This should be done every few months as prevenative maintenance.   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848   Once this process is started, It should not be interupted, do not use the PC during defrag.     Keep important data backed up at all times.

Thanks for the help. I do try to run a defrag every now and then, as well as runnig the disk clean-up program.
