Dell.com resets all customer passwords after cyber attack

(Reuters) - Dell Inc said on Wednesday that it reset passwords for all accounts on its Dell.com online electronics store on Nov. 14, five days after it discovered and stopped hackers who were attempting to steal customer data...

Dell said in a statement that on Nov. 9 the company detected and stopped hackers who had breached its network and were attempting to steal customer data. Investigators found no evidence that the hackers succeeded, but have not ruled out the possibility that they did steal some data, the company said.

Curious.

I bought a new Dell laptop for a family member on Black Friday, but was unable to complete the transaction online at the Dell Canada online store. It kept crashing, and I had to complete the transaction by phone. I thought it was perhaps due to online volume overload, but perhaps it was related to password problems.

And yet I continue to be able to sign in here, and at the online store using my old password. Which suggests that if my password was "reset", it was not changed.

I was forced to change my password here on 11-15-18. Don't know why.

Typed a post without logging in that day. Usually when I submit a post that way, it just tells me to log in and then it accepts my post. That day, there was a box saying I needed to change my password first, which I did...

And if I absentmindedly try to use the old password now, it's not accepted.

Interesting that Dell reported the data breach was on 11-14-18.

Security firm HackenProof reported a data breach likely at the data aggregating firm Data & Leads on 11-14-18 too.  They say ~83 million records (73 GB) were reportedly exposed.  Not clear how long the data were exposed before the leak was discovered. The Data & Leads website is still off line.

Coincidence or..?
