Thanks for this. I don't think it can be support assist that's swallowing my SSD (256Gig by the way).

The SAR folder is only 237 Meg..

I think I need to investigate further what's in the USERS folder. It seems way too big considering all user files etc are on another HDD?

Hi alanchown1:

What is the total size of the problem SSD?

Do you have SupportAssist OS Recovery (listed as Dell SupportAssist Remediation at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features) installed? If this emergency recovery software is installed on your computer and System Repair is ENABLED in your Support Assist settings at Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair | System Repair Is Turned On (see second image below) then SupportAssist OS Recovery will create a daily system restore point (snapshot) of your system in the hidden and protected C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\ folder.

Dell SupportAssist v3_8_1_23 Settings System Repair Enabled 03 May 2021.png

See my 28-Jul-2021 post in Radar_scientist's How can I find the location and delete the backups created by the Dell support assist for instructions on how to use the TreeSize Free utility to determine the size of your hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\ folder. If that folder hasn't grown beyond its typical ~ 20 GB size use TreeSize Free to scan your entire C:\drive (or whatever drive letter you use for your problem SSD) and look for any folders/files taking up excessive disk space.

When System Repair is turned on you can choose the maximum amount of disk space these Dell system repair points can use on your hard drive but on occasion something goes wrong and this hidden folder grows to a very large size. In most cases, if you DISABLE System Repair in your SupportAssist settings this should purge all your Dell system repair points but this doesn't always work. See SteveTree's June 2021 thread Reduce Disk Space Used by SARemediation for one example.

Hi @ujjal_d :

What is your Dell computer model and Windows operating system (please include the version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications)? What is the total size of your hard drive (e.g., 250 GB, 500 GB, etc.) and if you only have about 50 GB of free disk space left does your amount of free disk space decrease by a further ~ 2 GB every day?

If you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features are Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery or System Repair) listed, and if so what are the current version numbers?

If you have Dell SupportAssist Remediation installed it will create a large system snapshot in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder about 30 min after boot-up that can be used for emergency recovery if your system ever fails to boot or becomes unstable, but if the software is working correctly these snapshots should only use a maximum of ~ 25 GB of total disk space because older snapshots should be deleted to make room for newer snapshots.  The problem described in this thread only occurs if older snapshots in the C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\ folder are not deleted and the folder continues to grow in size until the user begins to run out of free disk space.

As I suggested in my 29-Jun-2022 post <above>, please follow the instructions in my 28-Jul-2021 post in Radar_scientist's How can I find the location and delete the backups created by the Dell support assist and use the TreeSize Free utility to determine the size of your hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\ folder. If that folder has not grown beyond its typical ~ 25 GB size then use TreeSize Free to scan your entire C:\drive (or whatever drive letter you use for the partition that is low on free disk space) and look for any folders/files taking up excessive disk space.

I no longer have SupportAssist or Dell SupportAssist Remediation installed on my Inspiron 5584 but here's an old TreeSize Free image from 03-May-2021 showing the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder using about 22 GB of disk space on my Inspiron 5584.

@lmacri The 256GB SSD C: drive on my Dell Vostro 7590 ran out of space.  I received application errors and a notification from Support Assist saying it could not create a system backup any longer.  After uninstalling every Support Assist program appearing in my application list (there were four), I created 45GB of free space on my SSD.  Everything is running find now and I have a 512GB SSD on the way to replace the original 256GB drive.  I will reinstall Support Assist after the SSD upgrade.

Hi Lintheada1976:

If the problem returns after you upgrade your SSD please let us know the names and version numbers *** of all the SupportAssist-related software you reinstalled as well as the specific folder that is using large amounts of disk space on your new SSD.  See my 17-Sep-2023 post <above> about how you can use a utility like TreeSize Free to check your entire C:\ProgramData\Dell\ folder to look for hidden subfolers like C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\Snapshots, C:\ProgramData\Dell\SupportAssist\Agent\Reports, etc. that might be using excessive amounts disk space on your hard drive.

This thread is almost 4 years old and is discussing an issue where the disk space used to store Dell system repair points in the hidden and protected C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\Snapshots folder created by Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.x (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery / System Repair) often exceeds the 12 GB, 15 GB or 18 GB maximum disk space chosen by the user. If you find another folder is using up your free disk space it would be better if you started your own topic so your problem receives wider attention.

*** NOTE: Ouranos' 14-Mar-2026 post in jmarsh09's Update Not Working On Support Assist states that their SupportAssist v4.10.6 recently updated to v5.0.1. Unfortunately, I checked today and the SupportAssist release notes posted on the SupportAssist for Home PCs support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/resources/manuals have not been updated since SupportAssist v4.10.1 was released in September 2025.

Before you upgrade your SSD the first thing you should do is to decide if it's even necessary to reinstall your SupportAssist-related software. I permanently removed all SupportAssist-related programs from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired because they were too buggy and consumed too much RAM, CPU and other system resources.  I also found the "system optimization" scans in SupportAssist (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) were too aggressive and had the potential to do more harm than good.  See my 08-Feb-2025 post in ygil's BSOD Issues After Windows Updates for details on the steps I took to replace the functionality of these buggy programs.
