Installing New Laptop Hard Drive

I just purchased a Scorpio 160GB ATA-100 8MB 5400RPM Mobile Hard Drive from Dell.  I was looking for a replacement for the dead Hard Drive on my Inspiron 8600 Laptop which was a lowly 40GB, but served my purposes well.  The Customer Rep assured me this one would work fine with the Inspiron so I figured the 160 GB would be a good idea.

I thought it would be an easy switch, but I'm running into problems already.  Since I have not done this before, I assume I am not doing it correctly (I'm following the Dell book instuctions).  When I remove the the hard drive screw, a piece slides out that looks like a drive.  The side has the insert holes for head phones and mic.  The replacement does not look like the one I removed - no side plate for the headphones, etc.

Questions:

Is this the correct Hard Drive for the Inspiron 8600?

Am I removing the entire Hard Drive when I slide out the piece described?  There is another piece I can see, but it doesn't seem to move when I try to move it out.

Thanks for your time.  I appreciate the help.

You need to remove the drive from the carrier (four screws on the bottom) and pull the blade connector from the back of the drive.  Install it the same way on the new drive and secure the drive into the original carrier.

Ejn - did what you said and got it installed - thanks you.  And now another road block - my CD device

was not always popping open when pushing the eject button on the side - it was no problem since I used the Record program to Eject.  However, it was working recently because I had ran the Dell diagnostics CD prior to ordering the Hard drive.  Any ideas on how to pop it open.  I'll keep trying the usual way.  Also - can I turn the computer on without the installation disk in the device.  I don't know if that would help pop it open but who knows?  I really appreciate the help.

See if there's a manual eject (hole for pin or paper clip).

A million thanks, ejn - it did have small hole and the paper clip did it.  Now comes the fun part - seeing if the HD works and installing Win XP.
