Install sata hard drive in an enclosure

Recently got an ICY DOCK, e-sata usb hard drive enclosure (MB559 series from newegg). I liked the fact that it has trays that you can interchange with additional drives. I plan on cloning the primary drive to keep as a backup in case of a HD failure and use another drive to back up photos etc. Also got 2- 250 gig sata 2 western digital harddrive for the enclosure. Couple questions before installing  hard drive in the enclosure.

1- I understand that the dimension 8400 can only handle 150 mbs. Does this also apply to a hard drive put in an enclosure? or can I leave the drive setting at 300 mbs. I plan to connect via usb 2.0.

2- Does anyone know what SSC is (Spread Spectrum Clocking) ? The WD sata drive has jumper settings to enable. Is it necessary?

3- Since the WD sata drive is an OEM there are no jumpers included. Do these Sata drives use same type of jumpers as Pata/Ide drives? It look like they do but not sure.

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance you can provide.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Sorry about the MBs error.

If I decide in the future to connect via the e-sata cable to motherboard,  is it necessary to enable something to the system BIOS??

Thanks again

" understand that the dimension 8400 can only handle 150 mbs"

that is 150MBs

there is a huge difference between mega bits and mega bytes. little b=bits
Big B=bytes.

1. You will be limited to the USB 2.0 max transfer rate of 480 Mbps,(much slower than 150 or 300 sata) so it makes no difference on the drive. The 8400 can handle it.

"Does anyone know what SSC is (Spread Spectrum Clocking) ? The WD sata drive has jumper settings to enable. Is it necessary?"

Don't mess with it.

3. they need no jumpers, leave as is.

Sata drives are ready to install, no need to mess with them. Unless you want trouble.

1) It's irrelevant what the computer can do, the hard drive enclosure's bios runs that drive, and the interface is usb - not SATA.  The speed of USB governs things.

2) No, it's not to be turned on.

3) No jumpers needed.

Yes you will have to turn the new drive to an "ON" status in the bios, and be sure it is recognized there also.

"echo?"

no, your post was not showing when I made mine. Forum problem.

I also noticed now, when I get an email and use the link in the email to respond, I am no longer logged into the forums, never had this issue before the 3rd. More bugs I guess.

Just wanted to say Thanks!! for all the helpful info.

Created a bootable back up (using Casper XP) to keep on the side and update periodically in the event I ever have a Hard drive Failure. It created a copy with all 3 partitions Operating system/Dell Restore Partition/Dell utility.(took about 30 minutes)

Just didn't want to do a full reinstall which is so time consuming. It is so much easier to just swap the HDD if the need arose.
