Help with startup in "Safe" Mode

My computer will not start up normal and I am trying to start up in safe mode.  When I hit the command to start in safe mode, it tells me that it is bypassing the system start and it gives me the A: prompt.

I typed in DIR and it shows me all of my directories but I don't know what to do from here.  Can someone please assist.

That is correct.  It would not go to safe mode start up with putting in the driver & utility disk. I try to hit the safe mode start up and it tells me that "A RAMDISK drive is available for this boot cycle as C: It contains several hard Drive setup tools and then it gives me the A:> prompt.

I'm sorry, it throws me to the D:\> prompt.  Not the "A"

How are you starting safe mode?  Normally, you hit F8 right before Windows starts and you get a menu with many options, including Safe Mode and Safe Mode Command Prompt.

Getting the A: prompt sounds like you booted from a floppy into DOS.
