Dell Dimension 4700 Hard Drive

I did a complete XP reinstall and was not sure when prompted about the hard drive and partioning. Well,,,,,,,I screwed it up and now I'm running out of space on my drive. I did it all over again and still running out of room after 13 gig on a 160 gig drive. What I need is the exact info to re-enter on the set up page when I reinstall for the hard drive page just like it was when I bought it. Default settings  or close to it ............Original 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM). I could go a little bit bigger for XP. Hard drive worked fine. I just deleted or changed something I shouldn't have. Other than my screw up Reinstall and format XP made a world of difference on Start-up. At least 5 times faster

Dell's PC Restore by Symantec feature will restore the C:/ partition to it's factory condition, but as you have reinstalled XP, the PC Restore may not work.

When you reinstall XP, for clean reinstall you need to delete the all existing partitions when you are prompted, then recreate the partitions and format the hard drive, following by installing XP.

Thats what I need to know is how to recreate the partitions. What exactly to enter when prompted as far as C and what it was before I messed it up. Numbers and NTFS or what I should enter on that page or any other info before I reinstall

After deleting all the partitions you should have a single maximum partition of about 152gb

You need to format the hard drive using the NTFS file system.  Hint use the 'Quick' format.

You may find this interactive GUIDE helpful, especially paragraphs 5 to 12, about deleting and recreating partitions, click the image to enlarge it.

Thanks Bev.......... For some reason I could not get to the point of deleting my C drive. Even though after, I could  enter what I needed. I reinstalled 4 times I think. I think there was another partition when I first started and no where did I read that I only needed ONE until you told me and believe me I searched plenty.  That's why I tried or thought I needed another partition and ended up using 15 gig out of 160. I used to reinstall 98 SE all the time  on an older HP and never had a bit of trouble (reinstalling that is). I think I had 15 gig total then and swapped discs alot. That interactive GUIDE was pretty wild. Well done. I don't think I ever saw instructions that well put together. That had to take some time. I found out the hard way that you must have   SERVICE PACK 3 installed to download your files and data if you saved them with 3. It took awile but I learned alot

A silly question, but was the XP reinstallation successful?.

At times we all learn the hard way. LOL   :emotion-4:

Yep, that's a really excellent site full of useful information, plus all the interactive guides.

Yes. All 4 times. But I just ran out of room when I started to put things back. The 4th time I did it right and now have what you said I'd have about 152 gig. The only problem I found was in Device manager. Under  other devices there is a yellow question mark for  Multimedia  Audio Controller. Dont know what this is. Maybe my inboard audio. I'm using a Sound Blaster Xtreme card. My audio is fine. Maybe my video. I'm running dual monitors, a 17 inch reg and a new 21.5  Dell wide screen with built in webcam  but both work fine. My all in one printer works fine and my Kodak printer dock works fine. Any suggestions or should I start a new thread somewhere else? It's not important but it wasn't there before I reinstalled. when I click on it says..... Location.....PCI  bus 0, device 30, function 2..........then the status says........The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)...To reinstall drivers for this device, Click reinstall drivers.......... Naturally this does not work and I dont know what drivers they are taking about
