Can't install PC games that have anti-copy protection. Is it DVD ROM drive related?

I am having a lot of problems getting certain PC games to install or run on my computer. When I put the disk in the DVD drive, and I click on "install" at the first screen, I can hear the DVD drive running, but nothing ever happens. The game(s) never begin the installation process. Also, the DVD drive will make noises much louder than usual, and the drive will vibrate really bad. Some people have told me that it's a copy protection conflict since it's only with certain games. Some people have told me that some games won't install if your DVD drive is also a RW drive.

Is any of this true, and would buying a newer and better 16x DVD read only drive solve the problem? If so, what is a good brand sold on this website that can read all sorts of PC game CD's.

Here are some of my PC specs if that will help:

I've heard of a few games with this problem, but not too many. It could be a drive problem. Can you read disc contents in Explorer or My Computer?

Yes, I can view the contents of a cd in explorer, play cd's and dvd's, and play several other pc games. I just don't understand why it can't read the disk for certain games. I'll probably go ahead and order the Sony 16x DVD drive from here. I also want to get a 19'' flatscreen monitor for games and to use with the XBox 360. CRT monitors are better for games than flatpanel monitors, right?

If i works with another drive, then you know it was the drive. Otherwise, it's not related to the drive. If you are running CD burning software, I know this can affect certain games. What do you have?

On the monitor thing, I suppose the conventional wisdom is that CRTs are better than LCDs. This was primarily because of faster refresh rates and better picture quality at various resolutions. Lately, however, LCD panels have been made with very fast response rates and some of those differences are now minimal. The proof, as the saying goes, is in the pudding. Try it with the LCD and see if you like it.

I tried installing the game on my sister's Dell computer, and the same thing happened. The DVD drive made a lot of noise and it never started to install.

On my computer, I'm running Cakewalk Music Creator 2002, Easy CD Creator 5 Basic, Power DVD, Roxio Videowave Movie Creator, Super MP3 Recorder Professional v5.1, Video Edit Magic demo,  Audio Cleaning Lab v1.04, Realplayer, Media Player 10, DivX player, and Rhapsody v3.0.

I'm also having a problem with GTA San Andreas. For about a week, I got a message that said "source CD could not be authenticated". I finally got the game to install, but it crashes everytime after the loading screen that says "GTA San Andreas". The Rockstar tech support people have sent me 2 alternate gta_sa.exe files, but neither one of them fixed the problem.

I just wish I knew whether or not it's my DVD drive, or some setting or configuration is wrong somewhere.
