Can regular DVD+/- player or writeable drive read double-layer disc?
Hi,
Is it true that most exisiting DVD-ROM drives, either player or recorder, can "read" and "play" double-layer discs?
I could not find too much information from the net, and am thinking to upgrade to a double-layer drive for the next purchase.
However, I do wish the discs can also be read and played by exisiting drives, instead of only by the new double-layer capable drive.
Many thanks.

Most commercial DVD movies are dual layer and a single layer DVD drive can read them. You should be able to burn a dual layer disc with a dual layer writer and view it on a standard DVD-ROM if you wish.
Be sure and compare the prices for blank discs. The dual layer media is considerably more expensive than single layer. Of course, you can still burn single layer discs on a dual layer drive, which is what I do the majority of the time.

Hi,
Thanks, just wish to make sure the rest of my older DVD players can read the dual layer discs burned by the new discs.
The major purpose for the dual-layer discs are for data library - documents, files, and some utilities saved for many years.
After your explainations, I feel much more assured to purchase a dual-layer recorder.
Thanks.
