Again Windows 98 SE CD/DVD

Have reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98 SE on an old Dimension XPS T Pentium 3 with 128 ram service tag 409W4.  I finally have all the drivers for the sounds back.  I have reinstalled the DVD software using the disk that came with the old system (CineMaster 98 ).  When I insert a DVD and try to play it says another application is preventing play back.  This a a combo CD/DVD drive and I can't think what might be doing this.  Would uninstalling and reinstalling help?

Hi Janie,

My wife is sort hollering, so real quick; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 9, article 12 and see if this will help.

Thanks for the advice but none of them applied for me as all settings were correct when I checked them.  The only one that didn't apply was when I uninstalled and reinstalled  it then was still coming up with the same error, another application is preventing play back.

PS:  I should have added that it is playing music cd's it is only when trying to play a dvd that I get this message.

Hi Janie,

If you happen to have Roxio`s Direct CD installed consider uninstalling it for now.
Did you go ahead and try the uninstall / reinstall of Cinemaster?

I found an update for the software to version 3.0 here:

Hi Janie,

Stranger things have happened in the past, one install may overwrite a needed file for another program. If the update does not help, uninstall the sound card driver and reinstall them.
Also have you checked your Direct X settings, you may require version 7 or earlier, been a while since dealing with this software.

Yes I tried the uninstall and reinstall actually when I first went to Add Remove Programs it wouldn't let me uninstall, it said something about a corrupt file so I went into Windows Explorer and deleted it there.  It Then let me reinstall and then I tried for the heck of it and uninstalled with no problem.  Then I reinstalled and am getting the same message.  I do currently have Roxio on my Dimension 4500  and am having no problem.  But this system the DVD was working fine before the reformat.  I thought it might have been the way I reinstalled, Windows, DVD CineMaster then sound drivers.  And I also thought the modem might be a problem since the system is not detecting it when I know I have the correct drivers.  Will try the update you posted and see if that helps.

Thank You and Merry Christmas

How would I check the Direct X on this older system?

Hi Janie,

I am typing on a Dell R400 Windows 98 machine at the moment, lets see..
Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information | look under Tool, should see Direct X Diagnostic Tool. You should see your version listed there.

Well still can not get the DVD back, is there another freeware program that I could download and try after uninstalling CineMaster?

Hi Janie,

I thought WinDVD had a trail version. I know a couple of people have tried it and was able to use WMP after the trail ended.

Happy New Year !!
