Dell Update v3.1.3 Stops at 10% Completion - Will Not Self-Update to v4.0.0

I noticed that a new Dell Update v4.0.0 was posted 09-Nov-2020 <here> on the support page for my Inspiron 5584, but when I launch Dell Update v3.1.3 and click the CHECK button it does not self-update to v4.0.0 and gets stuck at 10% completion, even if I wait for > 30 min.

I assumed I would still be able to install the Dell Update v4.0.0 upgrade via Dell SupportAssist but:

  • Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 (which reports "You are running the latest version of SupportAssist" at Settings | About SupportAssist) fails with "An unexpected error occurred" when I run "Get Driver & Downloads".
  • The blue "Detect Drivers" button on the Drivers & Downloads tab of the Inspiron 5584 support page <here> reports "Driver detection not available", even after I enter my Service Tag.

I know I can manually upgrade to Dell Update v4.0.0 per the instructions at Dell Update Version 4.x User's Guide, but is there some glitch in Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 and/or the backend Dell update servers that is causing all three methods of checking for updates to fail on my Inspiron 5584?

The problem appears to be fixed on my Inspiron 5584 after Dell posted new SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.3.0.13847 (i.e., not the buggy v5.2.2.12981 that was pulled from the Dell update servers). I ran Dell Update v4.0.0 today and it successfully installed the new SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.3.0.13847.

I also noted that:

  • A Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 "Get Drivers & Downloads" check reports my PC is up-to-date.
  • The option to enable System Repair in the Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair] has re-appeared.
  • The Dell SupportAssist Remediation program (now v5.3.0.13847) has reappeared at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
  • The SupportAssist OS Recovery panel has reappeared at at Control Panel | System and Security.

Partial success. I've fixed the errors described above in my original post by:

  • Reinstalling Dell SupportAssist v3.7.0.148 and Dell Update - SupportAssist Update Plugin 5.2.1.12926 (a.k.a., the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update) as instructed in DELL-Chris M's 19-Oct-2020 thread SA Uninstall/Reinstall pinned at the top of the SupportAssist for PCs board. Note: As instructed, Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.1.4.11989 was removed but not reinstalled.
  • Upgrading to Dell Update v4.0.0 by uninstalling Dell Update for Windows 10 v3.1.3 (the UWP app) and then installing the current Dell Update for Windows 10 v4.0.0 (released 09-Nov-2020) using the download link on the support page <here> for my Inspiron 5584 - see the instructions in the Dell Update Version 4.x User's Guide.

Once the DSA v3.7.0.148 re-install / Dell Update v4.0.0 manual upgrades were completed on 17-Nov-2020 both utilities were able to scan for updates and both detected a critical update for the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.2.2.12981, but the installation failed with both tools (see my post today in Miker5897's thread Can't Install SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools). At the time I did not realize this that other users were seeing the same update failure, so I reinstalled both the DSA v3.7.0.148 and Dell Update v4.0.0 again on 18-Nov-2020, but this time I used Revo Uninstaller Free v2.2.0 in advanced mode to remove the last traces of both products before reinstalling. Installation of the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.2.2.12981 continued to fail after those clean re-installs, which is not surprising since I learned  today that Dell recently pulled that v5.2.2.12981 update from their servers - see TheyDontHaveAClue's 18-Nov-2020 post <here>.

Dell Update v4_0_0 SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool Install Failed 19 Nov 2020.png

Unfortunately, this clean re-install of DSA v3.7.0.148 seems to have corrupted System Repair / Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery (perhaps because I removed Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.1.4.11989 from the Control Panel as instructed or removed a registry entry with Revo Uninstaller Free??). Since the clean re-install of DSA:

  • The option to enable System Repair in the DSA v3.7.0.148 settings has disappeared.  Note: This feature was added to DSA v3.7 to "Instantly rollback to a previous point in time on your PC to resolve boot issues or any other performance issues" - see the release notes <here>.
  • There is no SupportAssist OS Recovery program at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery where I can manually enable the System Repair feature per the instructions in the

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

  • There is no Dell SupportAssist Remediation program listed in Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.

Does anyone know how I can get System Repair working again with DSA v3.7.0.148 (Settings | System Repair | System Repair is Turned On), or do I have to wait for Dell to re-post the new Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tool v5.2.2.12981 on their servers?
