Can't open excel file by double clicking

Maybe someone can help me out. I can't double click on an Excel file or a Word file to
open it. I have to open the Excel or Word software first, find the file and then open.
Very bothersome. Help please.

Right-click an Excel .xls file and select "Open with>Choose Program". Select Excel on the list of apps and put a check in the "Always use" box. Click OK. Repeat for a Word .doc file.

Ron,
When I do this, it takes a few minutes and then Excel will open, but the file
does not open. I get an error message along the lines of "Microsoft Excel cannot
find the specified file. Make sure you typed the name correctly.......". You get the
picture. Also, MS Word is doing the same thing. Any ideas?

Does it do this with all Excel and Word files, or only a particlar subset of these files? Were these files all created/saved in the same version of Excel? If you copy the xls file to removable media and attempt to open it on another PC by double-clicking on it.

Start>programs>microsoft office>microsoft office tools>microsoft office application recovery

If that doesn't do it, you may need to uninstall Office and reinstall it. Hope you have the CD handy.
