Is a Precision 7750 compatible with TB16 Dock with 240W Adapter

Currently running an older Precision 17" laptop with the TB16 Thunderbolt Dock powered by a 240W Adapter.

Wondering if I can reuse this same dock with a Precision 7750 laptop, or if it's necessary to upgrade both at the same time.  Thanks!

@jw255  It should work, but:

  • It will only provide up to 130W of power, which isn’t enough to run that system optimally, so you’ll want to keep the system’s own power adapter connected. After the TB16, Dell introduced the TB18DC and later the WD19DC that connect to two USB-C/TB3 ports specifically to provide enough power to run Precision 7000 Series systems. So those are the docks you really want.
  • Additionally, the TB16 and TB18DC got more than their fair share of complaints over their lifecycle around stability and reliability, so this again might be a reason to consider the WD19DC.

But if you just want to repurpose what you have rather than spending more money, I’d suggest using the TB16, while keeping your system’s own power adapter directly connected as well.
