Windows 2008 UEFI does not recognize OS drive

When I attempt to boot into UEFI mode I receive the following error: No boot device available. The server has no issues booting to the OS.

System info:

 Dell Poweredge R410

Windows 2008 SP2 64 bit

Bios v 1.2.4

Dual 2.67 ghz processors

When you pick UEFI, the bootdisk has to use a GPT partition table (UEFI isn't compatible with an MBR bootdisk). In bios mode the bootdisk has to have an MBR partition table.

So, to change from one to the other, you have to reinstall the whole OS as the boot disk has to be wiped, after which it has to be converted to GPT.

If you boot to the Windows 2008 DVD and delete the partitions on the bootdisk, but don't get the option to install the OS (or it won't boot after the copying of data or so), try the following:

- when you boot to the Windows DVD, at the first screen where it asks for input, press Shift F10 and you should get a dos window.

- start diskpart

- do a "list disk"

- select your bootdisk (probably disk 0, but I'd recommend to be sure)

- do a "clean"

- exit to leave diskpart and exit again to close the window

- now continue the wizard and see if it'll install, if it won't accept the disk, do another reboot

This is based on my experience playing with converting from bios to UEFI once. On several other change-overs it went without a hitch to delete the partitions and let Windows install from there.

which raid controller do you have in the system, how big is your virtual disc (container size), and have you run the platform update to make sure your UEFI code is at the latest version?

There are no usb devices attached.

The OS installed on a 136gb partition

There is a SAS 6/iR Integrated Blades controller

Correct. There are no problems booting to the OS when the system is in BIOS mode. When I change it to UEFI I get 'No boot device available'.

You say that the server has no issue booting to the OS. Is this when the system is in bios mode perhaps? And when you change it to UEFI mode, you get that "No boot device available"?
