R910 quad CPU 8x memory riser - memory population/layout

Hi everyone

We have a Dell R910 with 4 CPUs and 8x memory riser cards.

At the moment the server has 256GB memory, 4x 8GB RDIMMS per riser.

The team has requested an additional 64GB for this server to take it to 320GB but from the documents I've found I'm pretty sure that 320GB spread across 8 memory riser cards is not a valid configuration. I have a feeling that they will need to step up to 512GB.

Is there a valid memory layout for 320GB spread across 8 memory riser cards?

Thanks, B

Hello.

Is there a valid memory layout for 320GB spread across 8 memory riser cards?

There isn't any supported memory configuration of 320GB across all the 8 memory risers. Yes, according to the system's documentation, only 512GB is validated.

Thank you.

Hi Robert. Thanks for the reply.

1) Is it possible to have the first 4 risers have 6 DIMMs leaving the last 4 risers with the existing 4 DIMMs?

2) Or is it possible to use different sizes? So instead of adding 64GB by using with 8x 8GB, could they do 16x 4GB so that each riser would then have 6 DIMMs (4x 8GB + 2x 4GB)?

Thanks

This is non-optimal memory configuration where the system will prompt to press F1/F2 key to continue during POST. The memory populated on all the risers has to be identical.

Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed but you will need an equal number of same so as to have balance memory across all the channels on the risers. See pages 92-98 of the Users' Guide for more information memory population guidelines and supported optimal configurations: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r910_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf
