Fatal firmware error installing RHEL8.0 with PERC H730P

Hi,

I have an R440 and R540, with a similar configuration of PERC H730P, 2x 1TB SSD in RAID1. PERC firmware is 25.5.6.0009 on both.

I didn't have any issues installing RHEL8.0 on R540, but I'm getting a fatal firmware error, followed by I/O errors on R440.

I zeroed both SSDs with dd without RAID and didn't experience any error messages.

Any ideas what could it be?

Thanks for the help!

Hello gsquared,

This may related memory error or it could indicate a block was read or written incorrectly. I checked PERC FW seems up to date. But let me ask BIOS, iDRAC also up to date? but let me ask, are iDRAC and BIOS up to date too? if not, can you update and check again? you can find out FW from here https://dell.to/2ZH9LYV because these updates can fix the issue if it's memory-related. Then can you check if there is a memory-related error under the system event log from iDRAC or another error? If there is no hardware error, maybe an action may be required on the RHEL side.  I don't know you have bought RHEL8.0 from DELL.  Apart from these, there may be steps you need to take in RHEL. Frankly, RHEL is not familiar to me, but I did some research. This article can help  https://dell.to/3iBtYrv
Also, you may use "xfs_repair" https://dell.to/3iFlkZ2
Let us know if it helps.

Hi,

I updated everything beforehand. The KB articles refer to XFS issues which is a higher level problem. The first error message makes it apparent that the RAID controller firmware goes to a fault state thus I would guess it is an issue with the controller.

Thanks for the input!

Hi,

IT could be PERC H730P. Let's check what in logs. I think your 14G servers still under warranty. Could you send your svc tag in a private message if possible along with the TSR log? You can gather TSR log as like this https://dell.to/3fd87ET
