"Can't set up a HomeGroup on this computer"?
I have a Dell Inspiron, Win7 Home Premiun, 64 bit, N4110 Laptop and a Dell
Optiplex GX520 with Win7 Professional, 32 bit desktop and I'd like to be able to
share files. The laptop can see the desktp on my network but can't access any
of the files. My desktop can't see the laptop at all. BTW, I do have MS
Security Essentials running on the laptop and the Windows Firewall is on - the
desktop is set up the same way.
When I try to set up a HomeGroup I get an error message that says "Can't set up a HomeGroup on this computer". Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks!

Hi eugenerealestate,
A HomeGroup is created automatically when you set up a computer with this version of Windows, but there are several things that could prevent you from creating one.
Please visit the following link that contains a Microsoft Fixit to resolve this issue and the steps to create a HomeGroup:

You can try restarting the service by going to control panel, Administrative Tools. All steps should have the status as started.

When you say all "steps" do you mean all "services" shoud show as started? There must be 200 and it looks like only about half of them show as started.

Hi eugenerealestate,
You have to start the “Peer Networking Grouping” and “HomeGroup Provider” services to use HomeGroup. Please visit the link that I have provided in my earlier post for the steps and to use the Microsoft Fixit.

OK, I have run the "Fix It" tool several times. The result in every case was a pop-up screen that reported pretty much what the home group repair tool had reported. It basically asked if I wanted to run Microsoft's Network Diagnostics which I ran and the results were "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem".
Again, I click on the desktop's C drive Icon in Windows Explorer and I get an error message that say's "You don't have permission to..." Same response when I try to go from the desktop to the laptop. I am the administrator on both and both computers are set to Home Group.
Lastly, both the the Peer Networking Grouping and HomeGroup Provider services show as started.
Can you think of anything else please?
Thanks!!

Hi eugenerealestate,
Thank you for your reply. As you receive a message while trying to access the C: drive, I suggest you to run an online scanner to check if the system is infected by malware. Please visit the follow link to use Trend Micro House Call:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Please try creating the HomeGroup again after completing the online scan and reply to this message if you need further assistance.
