connecting desktop with laptop via router

I have a Dim 8200 desktop and just purchased an Insp 9100.  I want to connect them for internet and printing.  I bought a EtherFast Cable/dsl router with 4 port switch.  Is this all I'll need?  Do I need a wireless card for the 9100?  Thanks for anybody's help....

If you intend to connect thru the router to your desktop you will need a wireless card for the notebook. You will also need to set up a network so your desktop can share your internet connection and printer. What OS do you have will determine the setup and you should get a wireless card that is the compatible with the router

Any idea what wireless card I would need?  802.11 b/g ? think I could install it inside the laptop?  cause it will use up a USB port and/or the only card slot I have.  I have windows XP OS.

What type of dsl/router do you have? Is it a wireless router? If it is you can put the card in the PCMCIA slot or a usb type which either can be removed when ever you need the slot. Most people may tell you to use "g" but in most cases "b" is all that is needed for a small network. If you intend to add more than 2 or 3 computers to your network than "g" may be the way to go.

nrmajnne,

I believe all current Inspirons include built-in Ethernet for wired networking. So unless you want the added convenience of wireless, the 9100's already equipped for wired networks.

You didn't specify the EtherFast router model number. If it doesn't support wireless, you'd need to replace it with a router that supports both wired and wireless connections.

But if you want to stay with wired Ethernet, you're all set.

I'm not sure what you mean by "wired Ethernet". It didn't give a model number but  the brand is LINKSYS.   My desktop and my laptop will be in other rooms.  Hopefully connected wireless via the router.  Have not received the router yet and am hoping I ordered the right one.  It's the EtherFast Cable/dsl router with 4 ports.  Tech Specs:

Status Indicators: Power, Ethernet, Internet

Cable Included: Network cable   (this goes from the router to the desktop right?) then wireless to the other room (the laptop)?

Compliant Standards: IEEE 802.3 (10Base-T), IEEE 802.3u (100Bast-Tx); FCC, CE

Ports Total (free)/ Connector type: WAN: 1xRJ-45 10/100 Bast-T Port, LAN: 4 x RJ-45 10/100Base-T ports

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quick.

I was referring to your new laptop. It comes equipped with an Ethernet interface but not a wireless interface unless you ordered one.

It didn't give a model number but the brand is LINKSYS. My desktop and my laptop will be in other rooms. Hopefully connected wireless via the router.

So the 8200 will be in the same room as the DSL/Cable router, so you can connect the 8200 to the router using Ethernet? And the 9100 will be in a different room, so you want a wireless connection to it?

Have not received the router yet and am hoping I ordered the right one. It's the EtherFast Cable/dsl router with 4 ports. Tech Specs:

Compliant Standards: IEEE 802.3 (10Base-T), IEEE 802.3u (100Bast-Tx); FCC, CE

It looks like that router doesn't support 802.11b or 802.11g. So if you're going to want to connect the 9100 (and/or the 8200) wirelessly, you'll need a wireless router, such as the  Linksys WRT54g.

Linksys has an excellent networking tutorial that will help you decide how to set up your network.

Yep, I'm afraid so! The two commonest "Etherfast" routers are the BEFSR11 and BEFSR41. Both are Ethernet only, unfortunately.
