cant connect to internet through netgear router..

i JUST got my dell inspirion 1525 laptop today and tried to connect to our netgear router - it didn't connect.

my sister has the same computer - for a few months now - and she is connected.

is there something i have to do - to 'set' it up?
I plugged it straight in and it worked... but doesn't help when i need to change rooms :/

I chose the 'CC' option as thats what my sister chose - we're not 100% of the password.. but i tried a few and it wouldnt go to the next
step of actually connecting..but there is one that we think is correct because it attemps to actually connect. then doesn't work.
when i tried to 'resolve' the problem it just said to restart the router and try again or contect someone.

resetting didn't work.

Is there something i have to do - like in settings or something or whatever to connect my computer to the router so i can get the internet from our actual computer (broadband)

any help is very gratefuL!

thanks so much

Welcome to the forums :emotion-5:

Is it a wireless router, because if it's not, the only way you can use it, is via an ethernet cable.

If it is a wireless router, you need to know the security password (the one your sister used), before you can connect to it.

You'd be best advised to read the manual which came with the router, or visit the Netgear website, search for the router model, and read/download the manual there.

If you can get into the router configuration webpage (using a wired connection) you should be able to get the encryption key the router is using.  The user manual, as Fireblade suggests, has the instructions on how to do that.

If I remember correctly, your Netgear router will NOT give you the password, just ******. You'll have to setup the Netgear wireless router over again and please remember the password. If you are using any type of wireless devices, print servers, wireless printers, etc..., you'll also have to set these up again as the passwords/SSID/Security will not be the same.

Press the reset button in the back of the Netgear wireless router and hold it for 30 seconds. This resets everything back to factory, except the login password.

Logging in(first time)

1. Connect the modem into the internet/wan port of the router. (The port that is closest to the antenna.)
2. Connect your computer into any of the lan ports on the router.
3. Plug the power cable into the router.
4. You should see 3 lights on the router (power, internet and lan connection).
5. Now, take out the power cable from the router and from the modem also. And plug the power back to the router, just to the router.
6. You should see 2 lights on the router (power and lan connection).
7. Open Internet explorer and in the address box type http://www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm and hit enter.
8. user name is:admin / password is: password(unless you changed it)

Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.

Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)

Use WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security. Most wireless devices work best with this type of security.

Mixed b and g mode(n if available)

Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels.

Save and exit. Power everything off for 30 seconds. Power everything back on, wait 30 seconds, now try to connect.

" Press the reset button in the back of the Netgear wireless router and hold it for 30 seconds. This resets everything back to factory, except the login password. "

Pressing the reset button also resets the login password. Everthing goes back to out of the box configuration.
