Network connected but internet only works in safe mode with networking or short time in normal mode
Hello everyone,
I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a pentium 4 processor, yes I know, old, but it works. It is running on Windows XP Pro, version 2002 with service pack 3. I have cable internet connected to a Linksys WRT100 router. As of late, my computer has been acting a little funny. I cannot seem to browse the internet for more than 5 minutes (with either Firefox 3 or IE 8) in normal mode, but the computer shows that I am connected to the internet. I was connected via a usb wireless adaptor, but since it has been acting strange, I have removed the wireless adaptor with the software and am now connected through an ethernet cord to the router which is connected to the cable modem.
The internet works fine in safe mode with networking though. Plus, in normal mode, I am able to update services such as McAfee virus scan and Spybot, as well as remote connect to another computer, which require internet although the internet browsers say that it is not connected. I have ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee virus scan already as well, all have not found anything. My roommate's laptop is able to connect to the network, via ethernet and wireless adapter, thus I do not believe it is either the router or modem. In device manager, my network adaptor icons did not show either an "x" or "!" icon. I have tried "WinsockxpFix" but that does not seem to solve my problem. I have tried going into "msconfig" to disable all of the "startup" programs but that does not seem to solve my problem either. I have tried disabling all of the "services" in "msconfig" as well but it appears that I need some of them to connect to the internet, as I do not have a connection when all "services" are disabled. I do not know which "services" in "msconfig" I need to have enabled to allow only internet to work, thus I have not been able to troubleshoot with this method. I have tried flushing ipconfig as well with the following saved as "Flush.bat" on my computer:
echo off
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset rese.log
netsh winsock reset
pause
System restore is not an option for me either as I have not set up a restore point, so the only one available, date highlighted bold is from yesterday, which will not help me. I really do not want to restore to factory settings. I am out of ideas and would be open to any suggestions you might have. Please help me fix this problem. Thank you very much in advance for the advice!

Wow! Look about 3 threads down and you'll see that I have a VERY similar situation. (Everything SAYS that I'm connected...) However, in normal mode, my browsers (IE7 and Firefox) don't connect AND I can not get ZoneAlarm or AVG AntiVirus to access the Internet. When I do a "Status" on the connection, it always shows just 2 packets received. I, too went to the MSCONFIG startup tab and unchecked everything that Volcano's reference listed as not needed. I have a DSL connection and a different model Dell system and LinkSys router but otherwise, we're in pretty much the same boat.
I have spent all afternoon on this and am QUITE FRUSTRATED because it still doesn't work correctly!! This system had been running fine for several years through the wireless but I still checked with a wired connection into the router and then a connection directly to the modem. I uninstalled both ZoneAlarm and downloaded them anew in Safe Mode. Zone Alarm re-installed correctly but I'm having a bit of trouble with AVG in Safe Mode. More news as it happens...

Green JB,
Have you tried using msconfig to eliminate startup programs one by one in an attempt to isolate the problem to one of your startup programs.?

Steve,
I have gone into msconfig and disabled all of the startup programs already, but that did not solve my problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help.

As a troubelshooting step, try running Internet Explorer with no Add-ons - Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (no Add-ons). Report back what you find.

I actually use firefox as my browser, but in either case, I tried to use firefox in safe mode and internet explorer with no add-ons while booted in normal mode both with my windows firewall enabled and disabled. I have now removed Ad-aware, spybot and McAfee virus scan for now untill this problem can be fixed. While trying to run internet explorer, it offered a diaganostic scan and here are the results:

Looks like a winsock problem? I have downloaded winsockxpfix and used it already. Perhaps that is not the right fix for me? Please let me know what other things there are to try. Thanks.

Do the following in both Normal mode (where there is no internet connection) and Safe Mode, where there is a connection, and post both results for comparison:
Go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message for both cases as discussed above.
