Internet Explorer is unzipping files upon download.

Hello Dell Community.

I have been searching for the answer to, what seems to be, a relatively easy question to answer, but to no avail. My problem is as my summary suggests, Internet Explorer is automatically unzipping files that I attempt to download. Ordinarily this would not be much of an issue, and would perhaps be convenient, however the files I am attempting to download, require that they not be unzipped, in order to function correctly.

The files are a part of a graphics application, which are preset values for the various graphics engines within the program. It is necessary for these files to remain zipped, and to retain their suffix, which is changed when unzipped as well. I am currently using Internet Explorer 6.0, with Windows XP as my operating system. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. I certainly hope there is a way to correct this issue, and await a response. Thank you in advance.

Hello NemesisDB, thank you for the reply. I am not entirely sure what you mean, to be honest. As far as I am aware, Internet Explorer is unzipping the file. It may be doing this by detecting a tag which lets it know the file is a zip file, or by some other means, I can't really say. I do not believe there is a third party program unzipping them, but again, I can't say for sure. I simply click to download the file (any zip file), select where I would like the file to download to, and then the contents of the zip file download unzipped to the location I selected.

I wish I could provide more details. If there is anything else you would like to know, please let me know, and I will try to give an adequate answer. Is there some way I can tell if there is another application doing this? Also, do you know of any setting that would make Internet Explorer do this? Thanks again.

Not a problem NemesisDB. Thank you for taking the time to consider my situation, and for posting. To any one else that is monitoring this topic, if you feel you have something to contribute, that may answer my inquiry, please post any suggestions you may have. I would like to find an answer to this as promptly as possible. Thank you again for the previous attempts, NemesisDB.

try looking in control panel>folder options>file types then look for zip.
highlight zip by left clicking it>advanced.

in advanced make sure that the box for "confirm open after download" is checked.

Thank you for the suggestion, bacillus. I attempted this straight away, but with no luck. Oddly enough, this did not seem to have an affect on any downloads, whether the "confirm open after download" tab was checked, or not. Since the file I am having difficulties with is not of a .zip suffix, I was actually able to find the specific file, under a difference extension, in "file types".

I made certain the "confirm open after download" box was checked on this, as well as for .zip files, just for good measure. I felt confident that this was going to be successful, but as I said, it was unfortunately not the solution for me. Thank you for your efforts, though, and it would be appreciated if you have any other suggestions.

Try right clicking on the link to the file and choosing save target as. Explorer will open a file you left click on if you have it associated with a program.
