HP MSL6000 Tape Drive 0 does not work and takes the whole library offline.
Hello Sir,
My name is Hesan Javed and i am currently on a Project which has HP MSL 6000 Library which has two driver Tape 0 and Tape 1 and Networker 7.5 sp2.
Now the issue is that when ever i configure the Networker as a New install i am able to "unload, mount and label" from any of the tapes, but lets say after a day, when i try to unmount a volume from the Tape 0 it does not respond and the whole HP library goes offline. So i have disable the drive Tape 0 and then restart the networker services and then the library comes back online.
If i do the inquire command on the command prompt i can only see the path of \\.\Tape1 but not of Tape 0 its empty.
I am having Windows Server 2008 R2. Kindly if there is any solution for this thing will be really appreciated.
I am stuck with this problem since last two weeks. First i was having windows 2008 Sp1 but then i thought may be upgrading it to 2008 R2 can solve the problem but then again it worked for only 2 days the third day the library went offline again. So i took a look at the drivers, i updated the drivers as well. If you guys have any reliable drivers please let me know.
Then i tried reinstalling the Networker Software and it worked fine. But again on the third day the library goes offline if we try to do any operation on this Drive.
It will be really kind of you guys to help me out this.
Thank you
Regards.

Hi Hesan,
I took a quick look at the Hardware Compatibility Guide (Powerlink) and the MSL6xxx is not listed with 2008. There is also a document called Configuring Tape Devices which might also be useful.

Hi Buddy,
Thanks for your link, i have checked the compatibility guide and it says clearly that the LIbrary is compatible with windows 2008 64 on page number 14-150.
Secondly, i am having Networker 7.5 sp2. And if i restart the library and the server every thing works fine. The drive comes online and the whole library comes as ready in the Networker.
But it works only for three days or may be for one day only. And after that if i run the INQUIRE command i can not see the path for the Drive 0. But for Drive 1 the path is there. And if i go in the device manager and try to right click on the drive 0 and click properties the whole server hangs.
Kindly if there is any other work around for this please let me know.
This project is very important for my organization.
Thank you
Regards.

Ok. I asked one of our specialists and he suspects it could be hardware related. Mostly because the tape is going nuts sporadically. Another reason could be a bad HBA cable..
