Now my problem is slightly different,my screen resolutions wont change they stay at 640x840,way to big. i used my documentation CD to see how to fix this problem, used the internet also, but the documentation CD gave me advice but i can only get to a certain stage because this :
Click the Monitor tab, and then click Properties-> Driver tab ->Update Driver
does not work, because it doesnt show up my monitor properties or my monitor, so i dont know what to do,i tryed add new hardware but didnt find my monitor. anyone know how to fix this problem?

Moderators normally do not respond because this is a peer to peer forum.  We little people help one another if we can or someone who just might be visiting this forum sees your question and suggest a fix if they know what is wrong.  You just have to be patient with the other member's here.

After installing an update from the microsoft website (to do with displaying rich text - the dell poup window initiated this) and restarting my machine it does not work. The system switches on and takes me to the login screen. upon clicking a user name, only the desktop background and a mouse are displayed. l have tried another monitor and the problem is the same. the dell monitor works ok on another computer. Pliz help

Uninstall the old video driver, reboot the system, than install a newer version of the driver for that video card.  Go back into Display Properties and adjust the screen resolution.  Make sure you have the updated video card driver on the desktop somewhere to install from.  What video card do you have anyway ??

You should always list your system model number, how much memory you have and the video card...This way we can suggest a fix, but cannot do so unless the information is given like I have on the lower left side of this thread...
