Dual monitors on a Optiplex GX1

Is it possible to set up two monitors using a PCI graphics card for one monitor and the on board video for the other. I can get the PCI monitor to work with the card in the top slot but the other monitor just shows vertical coloured lines. I have tried all display adjustments with no luck. I have even tried changing the video display driver for the on board graphics card but that does not work at all. I am pretty sure the on board video is AGP and I tend to think this could be the problem- trying to mix AGP and PCI adapters. I do not have any AGP slots on my system. Any advise would be appreciated!!!

uog28,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

Because Dell has not tested this system in a dual monitor configuration, I can’t say for sure this will help you but you may want to review the following Dell Knowledge Base article on setting up dual monitors in Windows 98.

How do I connect a second monitor to my system with Microsoft® Windows® 98 to use dual monitor support?

I'm not 100% sure but

You need to install a special driver for the ATI Rage Pro video card that will generate a Videobios.bin file or something to the C:\.

That contains the onboard video BIOS contents and then dual displays with the onboard will work.

Doesn't work on NT/2000/XP

You are correct.

For Win98 use the WIN98 Drivers.

For WIN98SE use the WINME WDM compatable Drivers.

Thank's for all your help but nothing has worked so far. I am still trying and if something does work I will let everyone know.

So you can use the motherboard video and a video card for dual monitor support in Win98 but cannot on 2000...great.

Purchase and install a dual headed video card such as the Matrox G450 PCI and disable onboard video. I just bought one for my Optiplex GX1. It should work fine since it is a PCI card.

I have the same problem but don't understand any of the comments to the primary question. Is it possible to use the on-board monitor port along with a PCI card in Dell optiplex GX1 computers to enable dual monitors?

In mine, The monitor connected to PCI card works fine will the onboard monitor is blank. There are no connection issues. I use win XP SP1.  The PCI card is a SONY Voodoo.
