Dell UP2715K Display and Mac

I originally purchased the 27in 5K Dell Display to use with my new MacBookPro 15 (Late 2016) on the advice of both Dell Sales and Apple.  After some mumbled, less than candid, information from Apple they basically said that combination wasn't  supported.   What I learned in the process is the display WOULD work with my iMac27 Retina Late 2015 as a second display.  I hooked it up and it works like a champ however it does take both of my Thunderbolt 2 ports which connect to the Dell Display through the included cable.  Love it.  Except now it doesn't work.  It blinks on with a beautiful image and then goes dark for 3 or 4 minutes at a t time and it reappears again.  Yes, I've unplugged and rechecked connections.  I can't even get the menus to come up on the monitor.  My iMac sees it there too.  This particular problem isn't one of the issues listed on the publications from Dell "Issues you might encounter with Mac".

I do have 2 of the LG 5K's enroute for use with the MacBookPro.

DellAlumStuSmith,

Click the link below for resolving the monitor issue.

I have poured over this document, and thanks to Dell for producing it.  Unfortunately it doesn't fix the problems as I said above.  When I connect 2x mDP (Mac, via Thunderbolt 2 output) to 2xDP on UP2715K It does work beautifully!  It actually looks better than the built in 5k Retina!   For a minute or two.  Then screen goes blank.  After restarting and reconnecting the entire setup I get the identical result.  It works then it doesn't.  The new sentence added to this document says 5k isn't supported as Apple's device driver doesn't support 2x mDP output.

The proposed workaround to use the monitor in 4K mode doesn't work economically, nor does it work technically.  The proposal is to connect mDP to DP, with mDP side connected to monitor.  There isn't anywhere to plug the DP side into the 27in iMac Retina Late 2015. Would a DP to mDP connector fill this gap?

DELLALUMSTUSMITH,

Thunderbolt 2 is the SAME as mDP (Mini-DisplayPort).test this below.

iMac27 Retina Late 2015 Thunderbolt 2 out port --> UP2715K mDP to DP cable --> UP2715K DP 1 in port

If no go, then you will need to purchase a Thunderbolt 2 to mDP cable. Also, ask the guys on the Apple Forum  if such a cable exist.

Mark, again I understand the issue:

To get 5K resolution on the  UP2715K connected to a iMac 27in Retina Late 2015, I am instructed to use the supplied 2x mDP to DP cable with the mDP end connected to the iMac and the 2x DP end connected to the monitor.  Works great for about a minute.

If you continue reading the document the little blurb  has been inserted:

UP2715K 5K display is not supported on Mac.

- Displaying 5K resolution on UP2715K requires 2 x DP1.2 cable connection with DisplayID support.

- Mac driver does not support 2 x DP1.2 configuration and DisplayID.

For both Dell and Apple, we have a wildly popular computer, and a peripheral that together promise a photo and video editing powerhouse.  So instead of all of these opinion pieces it would be nice if a knowledgable person from either company would actually attempt to connect the UP2715K to the iMac Retina Late 2015 and answer definitively if these products are compatible .  The "try this, buy that" approach from either company is far short of what we have grown to expect.

The Apple Thunderbolt 2 to mDP cable doesn't support 5k 60hz.

Update!  My Dell UP2715K is operating  beside my iMac 27in Retina 5K, Late 2015.   I can honestly say the Dell display is slightly better than the iMac in terms of edge to edge brightness.

My solution:  Connect the 2x mDP to the Thunderbolt2  ports on the rear of the iMac to Display Port inputs on the rear of the Dell UP2715K. Careful here!  It DOES matter which of the cables is inserted into each particular receiving port on display.  Those mDP outputs on the iMac behave just l like a video card with dual outputs.  I simply switched the inputs.  The Dell documentation should be updated to include the schematic for iMac in addition to the video cards.

I had the same Problem. Later on I could even hear a spark discharge every now and then. Dell support exchanged the monitor
