2005FPW Monitor and Oppo DVD ==> HDMI-compatible?

I tried plugging in my new Oppo DV-970HD universal DVD player directly into my Dell 2005FPW monitor using a DVI-to-HDMI Adapter from Blue Jeans Cable but it is not working. I get the message: "cannot display this mode" when on DVI-D.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Is this monitor able to run a HDMI signal?  The DVD player works fine with S-Video connection.  Thanks.

If you are using an HDMI to DVI converter then the HDMI signal is unlikely to be the problem. The problem could be your DVD player upscaling the output to 1080i, which the monitor does not support. Check the player's settings.

Thanks for the response.

I reset the Oppo player to output 720p and then attached to DVI-to-HDMI adapter and got .... snow.  :smileysad:

Then I got on the phone and called the Oppo tech support team.  They explained to me that the Dell monitor I have is probably not HDCP-compliant, while the Oppo DV-970HD is defintely HDCP-compliant.

So the upshot is they do not interface with each other due to current HDCP-restrictions. :smileysad:  :smileysad:  :smileysad:

If I wanted to run this player dedicated on the 2005FPW monitor I should have purchased Oppo's older DVD player, the Oppo OPDV971H, which does not contains the HDCP restrictions.

Either way the picture is smashing with the Oppo 970HD set to 720p and using an analog S-video cable connection.  It would have been nice to see how much it would improve using DVI-to-HDMI connection.  If anyone has had any success interfacing these two products in DVI, let me know, otherwise I will leave as is.

From the FAQ link on that Oppo DV-970HD page:
The digital video/audio output via HDMI from the DVD player is copy-protected with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). The TV or projector must be HDCP compliant in order to properly accept and play video/audio from the DVD player.

If you are using the HDMI output of the OPPO DV-970HD and the TV screen turns into "snow" after a few seconds of viewing, it is because your TV or projector does not support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

I don't get it - HDCP should only be an issue if the source content is HDCP capable and it is enabled by the content provider. DVDs do not have this capability (HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs do). Everything I've read about HDCP suggests that where a device does not support HDCP, and the content provider has elected to set the Image Constraint Token, you can expect to see either a message telling you that your display device is unsupported or a down sampled version of the content, running at 480i/p.

DVDs are encoded at 480i anyway - have you tried setting the output to that?
