Frame around the keyboard ...it's sticky!

Hi everyone.

After I've solve the Support Assist problem, I want to bring your attention for an aesthetic problem affecting my 2013 Latitude E6430 .

All the plastic part, adjacent to the keyboard, they are becoming sticky ... dust is sticking on it and I fear that the opaque surface layer will soon be gone (!).

Do you have any advice or product to use?

I was thinking for a car dashboards' spray > to be sprayed on a cotton cloth and passed over the entire keyboard and touch-pad area .

Thanks, Max

@KTM950SM

I don't have any Acetone to test with.

With that said I think it might be a little aggressive/corrosive!!!

Straight 70% Rubbing Alcohol worked great.

And yes it would be nice if the skin went all the way around the keyboard.

Welcome to the Dell Community @KTM950SM

If I remember correctly they do become "Tacky"

I have hundreds of the E6430 in my warehouse,

I'll be heading in soon and I will grab a few and see if there is anything that can be done.

Best regards,

U2

Wow ... really nice U2!

More than anything else, I would be interested to know if ther's a suitable product ... I remember that the exact same thing appeared on the "rubbery" coating of a motorcycle helmet ...

I went crazy to remove all of that coating, which it had become similar to a chewing gum !!

I remain on stand-by and thanks again for your reply

P.S.: A personal question:

Are you passionate about or have you done military on submarines?

@KTM950SM

And I will follow with a WOW.

I found everything from Excellent, Tacky and Sticky!!!

The sticky ones some of the lids were stuck to the base.

Experimenting on a corner I used the edge of an old memory simm to scrap away the sticky film.

Then used 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the remaining film.

Cleaned up pretty good.

You can see the little ball of "Stick Stuff" that scraped off the corner.

Then cleaned with the alcohol.

The other thing you could try is a skin.

Many thanks U2!

So do you think that a 70% isopropyl alcohol and water solution it'is fine?

I was thinking for a similar mixture, but using acetone (what women used to clean colored nails ... I can "steal" from my wife .

What do you think?

Could it be equally good or it's too aggressive?

P.S.: Good idea for skins ...but the part above the keyboard it would be excluded ...

Your very welcome @KTM950SM

If your ever in the St. Petersburg area let me know.

Maybe I can hook you up with a base you can use for parts.

Best regards,

U2

Thanks again U2, you're always very helpful and kind!

I'm very sorry for this serious delay in my replying ... but I've had several health problems!

P.S.: Same thing for you, if you happen to pass through Sanremo - Italy

I'm not having success with denatured alcohol 96% on some older laptops, like precission 5510 and latitude 7000 series. It keeps sticky. I only cleaned it gentle. What does work is a really tiny bit of baby talc powder rubbing around.

Hi Guys and hi to Sanders015.

If it's helps ...

to strip off the sticky layer of an old full-face motorcycle helmet
(very similar layer to my stickly's Latitude E6430),
I'd used the wife's nail-polish remover (acetone).

Who feels like trying on a small laptop area?

I have tried alcohol, Goo gone, none of those work, the only thing that works is Turtle Wax "Trim Restorer" easily found in Walmart, it preserve the looks of the surface and reduce stickiness by 95%, it may further improve if you give it more coats, but I'm using it for car dashboard and bumper, very good product.

Rubbing alcohol isn't working for me. The whole case on my XPS-M2010 is gooey and anything that touches it sticks to it. We live in a hot dusty environment and it gets a fresh layer of dust frequently. It used to brush off but now it's just building up. Same happening to the keyboard and this is the second keyboard I've changed for the same reason. The plastic rots so much the bluetooth reset button on the back of keyboard fell off Lol.  This a manufacturing "fault" NOT something caused by or under the control of the customer / user.Sticky rubber coatingSticky rubber coating
