Vostro 1320 graphics and touchpad error in Windows 7 RTM

Hi,

I installed Windows 7 RTM  32bit (from MSDNAA) on my Vostro 1320 and after a week of having it work fine, the touchpad stopped working. Device manager showed Error Code 10: Device cannot start. Then the video card started acting up (Intel GM45). Restarting and reinstalling the hardware drivers fixes the problem temporarily. Only once in about 10 reboots does all the hardware work correctly.

There is a Windows 7 Technet thread on the issue as well: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/cf9bc301-e3c2-4c5b-b9cd-9eab8582f45f

I have installed the dell Windows 7 drivers for these devices and it is really ticking me off that the laptop is unusable under a perfectly good OS. Some kind of incompatibility with the Alps drivers perhaps? Or maybe its combination of GM45 and Alps? Dell please work on a fix for this!

Since this problem did not occur when I first installed 7 I thought it had something to do with Windows Update. I reinstalled 7 and turned off Automatic Updates (bad idea in general) but after a week it started acting up again!!

Details:

Windows 7 Professional (RTM) 32 bit

Alps touchpad

Intel Integrated graphics (GM45)

Vostro 1320 (although I have heard of this problem on all the Vostro 1x20 series of laptops)

Latest Bios (A03)

Latest drivers for all the hardware off the Dell Windows 7 driver section.

Hi,

I've replied to your thread on the MS support forums too, but for the sake of completeness I've reposted here too...

I've just experience a similar issue on my Vostro 1720. Up until two days ago, the Microsoft provided Synaptics drivers were working fine. Then, after a reboot the touchpad stopped working - Device Manager shows "The device could not start. (code 10)".
I spent a few hours last night, and with the aid of System Restore was able to narrow it down to the Windows Update KB915597 which is the weekly Windows Defender definition update. I rolled back using System Restore several times to before the most recent install of that update, and each time, after installing KB915597 and restarting the laptop, the touchpad would stop.

Hope this gives you something to go on,

Cheers,

Greg

I have the same issue but I have the Vostro 1320 with discrete graphics (NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS).

The graphics driver failed once on me but has been OK since.

The ALPS touchpad worked when i first installed Windows 7 but just recently started to fail.

Please continue to follow and post on the TechNet thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/cf9bc301-e3c2-4c5b-b9cd-9eab8582f45f as well as here!

The more people we get, the more attention we will draw to the issue. Currently, Windows 7 is unusable on Dell Vostro 1320.

same problem with 1320 with intel g45 grafix.  i got this both on win7 RTM 64 bit AND xp 32bit.  I was thinking it was the antivirus software, I had symantic running and had problems, uninstalled it, and problem went away.  Then just yesturday I installed the new M$ free antivirus and today the mouse pad stopped working.  Never had a problem with the grafix though.

Same problems here too.

More often than not the touchpad will not work showing code 10 in device manager (USB mouse works fine)

Sometimes the display will not work at all (black screen) but the system seems to boot to the login screen (have to power down and restart)

Some times the display reverts to low resolution with code 37 in device manager.

Display problems usually clear up after re-boot but touchpad rarely works.

I'm having the same issues with a vostro 1720, geforce 9600 M.

Currently using windows 7 RTM (msdn download) 64 bit, with all updates. Bios version A02.

It was working for quite some time, until the windows defender updates kicked in... After that I never got back to my working copy. I tried driver updates for both my graphics card and my alps touchpad. Either it boots up , with everything working properly, or it boots up with a black screen where the login prompt should be or it boots up, without a working touchpad and video card. Very annoying this is.

I strongly advise Dell to take this up as  high priority issue, as you'll have a serious hands full of support issues when you officially release Windows 7 with these vostro notebooks...

It's very unpleasant behaviour to have when you're at a customer and you have to ask him for a mouse, because your touchpad isnt working properly...

As i posted here at technet

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/cf9bc301-e3c2-4c5b-b9cd-9eab8582f45f?prof=required

i think that this issue is caused by windows defender, because from the last update i had this issue. Disabled windows defender from his GUI and from windows services made touchpad works again ... i think this is related to the driver which for windows defender isn't a good windows 7 driver ... so windows defender disabled it

just try and let us know if this will solve the problem and this is the right answer

After a few more restarts, the problem began again. Dell, can we get some help here, please?

This is the sequence I used to resolve the issue:

Dell Vostro 1320
NVIDIA 9300m

Installed BIOS A04
Restart
Uninstalled NVidia drivers
Restart
Uninstalled Touchpad under Device Manager
Uninstalled ALPS software
Restart (Touchpad works fine - No ALPS software)
Installed latest NVidia drivers
Restart (Graphics working fine)
Installed ALPS drivers
Restart (Graphics and touchpad working fine)
Restart (Graphics and touchpad working fine)
Restart (Graphics and touchpad working fine)

I've got my fingers crossed, but as I said, three restarts since the ALPS drivers and both are working fine.

Keep in mind, though, I have NOT refreshed the Windows Experience Index, but my score is still showing as a 4.3 and everything is working fine (i.e. Aero Peak, color settings, etc.). I just don't want to temp fate at this point.

Sorry but,  until now (for 3 days and maybe 10 restart) since i disabled drivers control from windows defender all is working, Vostro 1720 with Win 7 Ultimate and shipped (with win 7) intel gma drivers & touchpad drivers. Maybe i'm wrong, but if the issue come in with defender, forefront or ms security essential installed and updated and disabling the driver control resolve the issue, isn't all clear?
I don't say it'ìs microsoft fault (because gma & touchpad drivers are not officially compatible with windows 7, so  microsoft's behaviour it's  ok) but for me the solution until now it's pretty simple ...
hope this helps ;-)

I am having the same problems on my Vostro 1320. At first I did not mind the touch pad not working since I use a notepad USB mouse anyway.

But then my display adapter (Intel GM45) started acting up, drivers weren't loading etc. and now the display is completely non-functional after the windows boot logo.

The only way I can get the display to work at all is in safe mode at low res. I have tried updating drivers from MS but to no avail.

Please fix this Dell, this is unacceptable.

It seems my issue is resolved at the moment. I can't say for sure, but let me elaborate on my problem and solution.

When I installed windows 7 RTM 64 bit, everything was working fine for about 2 weeks i think. I then installed the famous windows defender updates and then things started to go wrong. Initially, I had installed the alps touchpad driver from dell and the nvidia drivers for my 9600M.

After it went 'bad', i seemed to have contineous issues with both my touchpad and graphics card. The error for the alps touchpad would be 'the device cannot start, code 10), whereas i got a code 43 for my graphics driver.

I tried with both synaptics and alps drivers for the touchpad. The dell vista 64 bit driver & the nvidia 64 bit drivers for windows 7. Nothing worked and I couldn't get my videocard to get to work again. Very annoying, as standard VGA drivers (or faulty nvidia drivers) arent really great for decent usability..

In any case, last night I have resolved all these issues by simply installing the 32 bit! latest alps driver from this website:

http://alps-touch-pad-driver.software.informer.com/

Do note, that before installing this driver, I had installed the vista 64 bit drivers for my graphics card, but i doubt that is related. I suppose the nivdia driver would have worked just the same. The way I currently see it, it all comes down to the alps touchpad, causing issues with your graphics card.

I strongly recommend Dell to give alps electric a call about this. It doesn't look good if you need to start fetching your drivers from 3rd party websites. Either way, I can start to enjoy my vostro again, which is, apart from this issue, a great laptop.
