Problems with external GPU
I am having issues getting my Dell Latitude XT3 laptop to recognize the graphics card that I purchased for it (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SC6HAS4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00). I am building an external GPU using an adapter that I purchased from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/SAWAKE-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent/dp/B013P0T3AE/ref=pd_sim_sbs_147_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51abl6kfweL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1SJJA7PZ24112HAMQ3HZ). This is the power supply that I am using for the build; it is 500W (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00). Here are the specs on my system before I go into details on the issues that I am experiencing.
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit) with Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz
RAM: 8 GB
From the link, you will see that I am trying to use an EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SSC.
Alright, so I am not sure if my laptop is simply not compatible with the adapter, or if there is a problem that I can fix. Hopefully I don't have to return everything.
So here is the issue. I seat the card into the adapter, plug in the PSU, plug in the additional power from the adapter to the actual graphics card, and I plug in the expresscard cable that connects the adapter to the expresscard slot on my laptop. I also have the card connected to an external monitor using a DVI connection.
When I boot the computer, the PSU fan begins to spin. So I know power is going to the adapter. Even with the PSU turned on, if the expresscard is not connected to the laptop, the PSU fan does not spin. So I have a feeling that some sort of power is going to the card. The fans don't spin up on the card because they are designed to not spin unless the card gets hot; so I cannot be sure if the card is even getting any juice. Obviously, my external monitor remains black and says "No DVI Connection" when I try to get this to work. I looked for the hardware under the device manager->display adapters; it doesn't even show up. All that appears is the Intel HD Graphics 3000, which is enabled currently. How do I get the laptop to recognize the fact that there is an external card connected to it? Any advice would be appreciated, I am really stuck on this. I've never even built a PC before, so I don't have too much experience. Step by step help would be fantastic. Or, if it is hopeless, I need to know that so I can get my money back for all this extra hardware. Thank you in advance.
