I can't duplicate an image when using a projector with my XPS 17 L702X Laptop....

I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64Bit OS.

The projector is a Viewsonic PJD 5255.

I don't have Duplicate screen in the dropdown area in the Change Display Settings window. The only choices I have available, and somewhat work is: Extend, PC screen only (which is my laptop screen), Second screen only (which is to the projector).

I want to duplicate the screen so that I can view what's on my laptop screen & have the same image projected from the projector onto the wall.

The ONLY way I can select Duplicate image, is when I select: Project to a Second Screen (found in Control Panel> All Control Panel items> Display). Then a window slides out on the right side of my laptop monitor with 4 choices: Extend, PC screen only, Second screen only, and Duplicate. But when I click on Duplicate, it doesn't duplicate the image. It extends the image so it looks and acts like I have a really big monitor- meaning I still have my laptop image on my laptop with all the desktop icons, but the image the projector is showing is something that is off to the right of my laptop monitor.

I have to scroll my mouse cursor off to the right of my laptop monitor before I see my cursor on the projector image showing on the wall. I can also see a few icons down on the left side of the taskbar on that projected image.

I have connected this projector by HDMI cable from the projector to the laptop. I have also tried a connection via: component video (on the projector) to HDMI (on the laptop).

Nothing seems to work to get a duplicate image. On either connection I set up, I can get the Extend to work (but it doesn't show what's on my laptop monitor), I can get Second Screen to work (this makes my laptop monitor go completely black, but it does show the laptop image on the wall- projected from the projector. This selection shows all the desktop icons and everything that's on my laptop monitor, but I can't view the image on my laptop monitor-it goes completely black.

What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do, to get a duplicate image to work correctly when I connect my XPS 17 L702X Laptop to this Viewsonic PJD 5255 projector???

I am completely baffled as to why it doesn't work the way I want it to.

ANY help, suggestions, or tips on getting this working the way I want will be much appreciated.

Best regards, Steve

UPDATE: I finally ended up buying a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Video Adapter to plug into the mini display port on the laptop and plug the other end into a VGA video connection on the back of the projector.

Worked as it should. As soon as I plugged the adapter into the laptop and into the back of the projector and turned the projector on, the laptop screen grew 2 black bars on each side of the display and I can now view the laptop display and AT the SAME TIME see what the projector is showing on the wall.

So, in case others have this problem, buy the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Video Adapter and you should be all set.
