How to recover a Windows license key for a machine with a damaged tag?
I need to reinstall Windows on a Dell D620. The machine's license tag is damaged so that the entire license key can't be read. How can I recover the key?
The instructions I've found for recovering a license key involve decrypting an entry read from the Registry. But I can't read the Registry until I restore the system! If I can't restore the system until I get the license key from the Registry, I'm stuck.

You're going to need Dell OEM Windows install media (which won't need the license key anyway) -- any other Windows distribution won't work even with the Dell license key.
If you're the original owner, you can see if Dell will sell you recovery media (they won't for anything older than Windows 7, though).
