system vs administrator password in BIOS settings

Recently bought a new Dell 3147.
In the BIOS menus, I'm able to set a "system password" but unable to set an "administrator password"
Does anyone know the difference?
I'd like to password protect my BIOS settings.
Thanks

Hi Techman41973,

Thanks for posting!

You can setup two different types of passwords in the DELL BIOS:

  1. System Password: This will be prompted before the system can boot up, and load the operating system.
  2. Setup password: The system will prompt for this password only when you are trying to access the BIOS settings.

Depending on your situation, it might be a good idea to enable both the system and setup password at the BIOS level.

The administrator password (which can not be accessed by the user) is for use by the Tech Support department.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert, thanks.

Looking in the bios under the security tab, there is no "setup password" listed.

I'm not sure where I would set the "setup password" to protect the bios. thank you
