screen won't come on after closing lid. HELP

I have recently moved back home for the summer and brought my computer with me. Now whenever I close the lid of laptop and open it again there is nothing on the screen. The only thing you can see is the backlight come on. I have to hold down the power button and reboot to do anything. I have updated the modem driver and graphics controller. Some one please help because the reason I bought I laptop is so I can close it and take it with me. Thanks

sounds like a bad reed switch maybe. make a sandwich, get a drink, sit down in a comfy place with your system and call dell tech support.

again, it kind of sounds like a sticking reed switch; the comp. isn't recognizing you have opened the screen back up. make sense?

the best way to get your problem resolved is through dell tech support. if you don't want to go the phone route, you may want to e'mail them. click on "contact us" at the top of this page and supply them with as much info as you can, like service tag or express service code, system type, os, and as much detailed symptom info you can offer.

good luck.

the reed switch is what tells it if the screen is open or not. ie, it turns off the video when you close your machine. so thats a maybe. if you're getting backlight though, it may be a bad lcd.

the computer works fine once I restart it but it is just when I close the lid and open it again.

Funny, I started having this exact same problem on my Inspiron 1100 around the exact same time.  It's not the reed switch because if I leave the lid open and use the Start button to put it in standby mode, the same thing happens.
