"The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error"

We removed our old hardware from the broken Dell inspiron n5110 and placed it into Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA Tool-Free Hard Drive Enclosure, and tried to access the hard drive with another Dell with windows 8.1. We are not able to access the files as we get an error message stating "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". What does this mean and what can/should we do in order to get it working? Thank you in advance!
