docking station USB and Palm Pilot

I have a Dell D600 with a D/Port replicator that is having problems with a Palm Pilot hot sync

i'm running w2k and the palm is a Tungsten T2.  When I connect to the USB ports on the rear of the docking station i can't run a hot sync.  it fails and i then get a warning that i removed a device incorrectly.  If i use the USB ports on the rear of the laptop, all works fine.  The manual states that the ports on the replicator are 2.0 but the Dell web site says the Laptop is 1.1.  The Palm has a seperate power supply for the cradle.

Thanks for all help

B_Lloyd,

I have the same problem with my Tungsten T3. I contacted Dell Technical Support who resolved the issue by disabling the USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller in the Windows Device Manager.

Unfortunately, this has proved to be more of a problem.

By doing this, after a reboot, my Bluetooth module and my USB mouse are disabled. The only way to re-enable them is to re-enable the USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller. Funnily enough, this also allows my Palm T3 to still HotSync...!! Until I reboot again that is....

The Dell Technician informed me that there isn't a fix for this problem at the moment and to keep an eye on the Knowledgebase/Forums for help!! Great advice hey?!!

If I find a resolution I will post it on the forum for you. Likewise if you resolve the issue would you mind doing the same?

CVTIMUK

I have tried this with 4 laptops and it seems to work

goto http://support.dell.com/filelib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R70917

download R70917

as administrator and undocked run setup

restart

device manager - Intel PCI to USB Enhansed host - update driver

search for suitable device

should find c:\winnt\drivers\d600\ousb2.inf

accept - complete the install - reboot

dock PC

you MUST have a PS/2 type kybd handy to complete the process

let PC install drivers for new devices found

i have used c:\winnt\inf\oem8.inf and oem44.inf - both worked

let user log on and test the hot Sync

B_Loyd,

I tried what you have suggested but I'm still getting the same issue. Dell D600 with D/port and Palm Tungsten T3. 4 of the users have the same model and all having the same issue. I have spoken to Dell and they suggested having the usb connected directly to the laptop (yea...and with the usb port on the back of the laptop).

Also, I can't find ousb2.inf and the steps you provided did not work for me.

Same case with me, there is no ousb.inf. It has to be downloaded from somewhere, but I don't know.

still need the update for this issue from B_Loyd.

I guess you don't have the MD and IT Manager wanting to find out the status of the issue on a weekly bases

Kind of  if the problem is not resolved soon.

I have had this problem too and CVTIMUK's solution above worked for me. I disabled the USB 2 enhanced controller, XP re-detected all the USB controllers/hubs/devices/whatever, and then the Palm hotsync worked perfectly. Fortunately for me, none of my USB devices require USB 2.0 and they all worked perfectly after the change (even my biometric mouse). I know this is not a satisfactory solution, but it seems obvious that Dell/Intel/Microsoft need to get together and sort this driver issue.

I am wondering now in mid-October if there is a fix for this yet.  I have tried the new cable route (at a cost of $45Cdn)  plugged into the laptop while it is attached to the replicator but this simply gives different problems with standby, etc.

It is some bloody irritating that there is no fix for this yet when in the range of $3000 has been spent to have this technology working for you!

I have a Dell 600M with a D/Port, and am having the same problems.  Dell support sent me to this forum to try the "solutions" discussed, which of course did no good.  I complained (nicely) that they obviously weren't reading the description of my problem since they were telling me to try things I'd already described, so they sent me here.

Clearly, this is a bug they aren't eager to fix, although it must be causing many people trouble.

I don't mind tech support not being able to solve some problems.  It is the thoughtless responses from people who couldn't be bothered to read the whole problem description that bother me. At least tell me it is a documented problem rather than send me off to a forum of messages from people who couldn't solve the problem either. Unbelievable!

Have you tried installing the Notebook System Software (R82491.EXE ) from Dell's Support website http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs.  It contains several patches for the D series laptops including the D/Port USB drivers.

Hope this helps,

Joel

The latest...

Dell (in the form of a problem resolution consultant, in response to an email to Michael Dell) claims definitively that the problem is explicitly a Palm Tungsten T3 problem.  They say that they have fixed all of the other USB related problems in the D/Port.  Sounds fishy, given all the posted problems, but that's their current answer.

I forwarded this information to Palm's CEO and received a reply back saying that they would look into it and get back to me.

Meanwhile, Palm's Support via email says "palmOne handhelds doesn’t support synchronization using docking stations".  What an unbelievablely stupid answer!  I forwarded that to Palm CEO as well.

Joel,

I realized in my last post that I didn't respond to your suggestion!  Yes, I tried that, and every other fix ever suggested by man without success.  As you'll realize from my previous post, I've been trying working this problem up the support chain of command at both Dell and Palm.  The problem has existed on these forums for over a year, and it seems inexcusable to me that Palm's highest end PDA can sync to Dell's highest end Laptop via a docking station.  So I've been making my self as gracious a pain in the neck as I can about the issue, to see if I can break through the incredible corporate inertia that these two companies have.

Probably not, but it is entertaining at least.

Ok.  This is probably my last submission on this issue since I have a resolution to my problem in the works.

Dell's last communication to me, after I cc'd Michael Dell on my emails, came from a consultant issue resolution specialist (or some such consultantish title) ensuring me that the problem is NOT with the Microsoft drivers, nor with the Dell D/Port, but specifically with the Palm Tungsten T3.

I passed this on to the CEO at Palm (are web search engines great?), with a "shame on you for letting this issue go on for over a year..." type message.  One of his people wrote back with a promise to investigate and get back to me.  Within a couple of days, I was getting phone calls from Palm support folks.  The went through all the standard 'fixes', non of which worked in my situation, and then offered to get configuration in their lab working using a powered USB hub, and then to send to me the USB hub for free.  This sounded good.

A day later, I received another call from Palm support saying that after reviewing my situation, they were going to send me a brand new T5 to replace my T3!

So, that's were it stands.  The only thing remaining is to receive the T5, and to follow up as to whether this is an admission of guilt at PalmOne that the problem is actually with the T3.  It is either that, or simply superior customer relations to Dell.  I'd like to know, but I'll probably wait until I receive the T5 before I ask .

If I learn anything, I'll post that info and then THAT will be my last submission.

Good luck, and Merry Christmas to all!
