I am glad you asked this. I am looking for a car charger for a Inspiron 5100 so we can watch movies on long road trips.
someone said that you could just buy a 12 volt power covertor and plug the laptop into that while traveling.

I have a brand new one which I bought from dell for my inspiron 8200, would that work with yours?
If it does I'd be happy to give it to you, I live in surrey, if you are local I can take it to you or you can pick it up, if not if postage is cheap I'll send it.

Might I recommend this "pocket inverter" 175-watt unit from Xpower:
http://www.crutchfield.com/ISEO-rgbtcspd/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=850&I=539PI175
Crutchfield (the vendor) is a well-respected home and car audio supplier (GREAT aftermarket car stereos with really cool install kits!). This unit works GREAT!
But even Target stores have a similar unit, also by Xpower, called an Xpower 175.:

(this URL should be all one line)
The difference is the "pocket inverter" model is smaller/flatter and comes with a short cable to allow you to plug into either a car or an airplane (the Xpower 175 might not plug into an airplane). The Xpower Pocket Inverter is about $50, the Xpower 175 is about $40. Both have about the same power capacity.
Enjoy!
