Video Black Screen

Hi,

Strange but there seems to be quite a few threads about black screens here. I have the same problem and am still trying to figure it out.
I first noticed my problem when I would put the laptop into sleep mode and coming out of this mode the screen would be black. You could see that the laptop was reloading things because the hard drive would be running and I was getting audio sounds as things opened. Sometimes I could reboot and get the screen back. But not anymore.

I can run by using the VGA Mode at Windows boot screen. While trying different solutions I happened to download an update for System files for my laptop from Dell. After running the update my screen came back up and I thought it was fixed. Next day though when I booted up the laptop the screen came up black again. Running the update again gives me back my regular screen again.

So now I'm trying to figure out what the heck is happening in Windows that is causing this strange behavior.

Any clues or suggestions out there?

Thanks

If it works fine in VGA mode then it has something to do with the drivers. I suggest you completely uninstall the video drivers in safemode and download an updated driver from support.dell.com and install it. also update the directx software.

Changing the video drivers doesn't work for my Inspirion 9100 either. I know the video card works because like I said I can reinstall the system drivers update and get my video back. Until I turn the computer off and reboot that is. It comes back black during the boot sequence. I get a video image during the boot process until Windows tries changing to the higher resolution at which point it stays black.

Also I've noticed that when I do get it working at the correct resolution and the computer is put into sleep mode the screen does not come back.

This is driving me crazy. Help please!

Hi guys,

I had a similar problem with my Inspiron 9100 and I was able to fix it.
I could see boot screens, bios setup, windows logo and safe mode.
But after normal boot instead of windows desktop I had a black screen on laptop lcd, no problems in external monitor connected to vga port.
Same problem with both WinXP and Win2003.

I was lucky, beacause my problem was the lcd panel switch that was stuck.
It's the little stick that turn off the lcd when you close the panel.
The switch was stuck in closed position, so windows acted as when the panel is closed, turning off the lcd screen.

On my Inspiron 9100 (and other dell laptops) it's located near the power button.

Hope it helps

Francesco

Hi everybody,

The problem was fix by this way on the I6000: I had to reinstall all the OS.  After everything was ok, but (and this is the best, I think), when later I put the microsoft security patch (microsoft update) and reboot the machine: black screen one more time after the boot screen ! On another post, somebody was explaining that he had the same problem.

So I started in safe mode and delete the video driver (by the control panel, ATI dysplay driver AND the ATI panel). Then I put the last graphic driver from dell (still in safe mode) and everythnig is ok now.

Maybe by you it will works ?

Thanks for the responses to my problem. The sticky button seems to have been the issue on my system also. Now I just make sure that it sticks up as far as it will before I boot and no problems with the black screen anymore.

The button referred to is located in the center of the laptop base right above the power button and under the DELL insignia on the screen. Looks more like a small nub.

Hope this helps all in the future.

Great Tip!

Button on my 9100 also was stuck down causing the display to go dark after booting into Windows XP.   Safe mode and 640x480 worked but any other mode caused a blank screen.

Thanks!
