Very, Very, Very slow computer

Hi!

We have an Inspiron 1525.  It is about 7  years old.  It is running slower than molasses in July in Mississippi.  A few months ago, a person who works on computers suggested installing Windows 7.  (We had Vista).  He said it would speed things up considerably.  It may have worked for a very short time, but now it is running slower than ever.  When  I click on the icon for an internet search engine (I usually use Google Chrome) it takes forever for it to come up.  And the whole thing just runs very, very slow.

My husband thinks we need to clean some stuff from the computer, but I have NO idea what kind of stuff we should clean out of it.  I run scans every week and nothing much comes up in terms of viruses or anything like that.  We have had a few viruses but have had them taken care of.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.  When I mentioned the possibility of getting a new computer one of these days, the computer tech said he could put a  new system in the existing laptop and it would run like new.  Is that something we should consider??

Thanks so much for your help.

The computer tech was looking for business, not thinking of your pocketbook. It is absolutely foolish to refurbished an old laptop since it could cost twice the cost of a new computer. Most laptops last for 4 years or so. Buy a new computer. You can now buy some models for about half the price you paid for the old one.

Yours is probably slow because of aging or failing parts, dust buildup and an old full hard drive. Even that is not worth changing. Run Disk Cleanup and start shopping for a replacement computer.
