Vertical coloured lines on screen
I have an Inspiron 1564. At irregular intervals multi coloured vertical lines appear on the bottom part of the screen. Moving the screen clears the problem until it happens again. This laptop is now 3 years old but had its motherboard and screen replaced after 5 months and its hard drive and battery after 2 years. Seems an unlucky PC. Any suggestions re latest problem?

Hi Clontarf,
As correctly said by ejn63, please connect an external monitor to the laptop when the issue occurs.
If the vertical lines do not occur on the external monitor, ejn63 also suggested reseating the Display cable in one of his posts. Are you comfortable in reseating the Display cable?

Hi Clontarf,
Please run the LCD BIST (Built in Self-Test) on the laptop to check if there is any problem with the LCD screen.
To initiate LCD BIST:
If you see the colors on the screen without any distortion the LCD screen is fine. Or if you find the multi colored vertical line in the test then the problem is with the LCD screen and LCD needs to be replaced.
Please reply for any further help.

Attach an external monitor. See if the same fault shows - if it does not, reseat the cable that runs between the display panel and mainboard. Check the cable for damage (both in the conductors and in the pins. If there's evident damage, replace the cable with a new one. If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the panel.
If the fault DOES show externally, it's likely a bad video chip - replace the mainboard.

Many thanks for the very prompt reply. As suggested I ran the LCD BIST and there was no distortion at all in the four colours, so presumably the screen is fine. Any advice on my next step?

When the fault does show, attach an external monitor to see if it replicates itself on that - if it does, the mainboard is bad. If it does not, the display cable or screen is bad.

Many thanks to you both. The problem lay with the cable and replacement of it has solved the problem.
