Upgrading the cpu on Dell Inspiron 1525

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5550 (2M Cache, 1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)

Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family.

Motherboard Dell Inc. 0U9990C

4GB 2X 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300s SODIMM 667 MHz

I want a list of compatibility cpu's I can upgrade to.  If possible I would like to upgrade to a 64Bit cpu.  I am new to upgrading the cpu in a laptop so I would also like to know:

1..  If the 4GB PC2 5300 Ram I currently have will work with the new cpu.

2.. I have also read that the graphics is integrated indo my current cpu so I will need to take that into account when upgrading.

3..  I would like to upgrade to the fastest cpu that is compatible with this laptop but if that is not possible I would like a list of compatable cpu's.

Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks in advanced, Chris

You now have a 64-bit capable CPU.  Yes, the RAM you have will work fine with a new CPU. No, the video is NOT part of the CPU - it is part of the chipset on this system, so it cannot be upgraded.

You can use any of the COre 2 CPUs on 800 MHz or lower bus speed -- excepting the Extreme Editions.  These max out at the T9500 CPU:

Is it worth spending $300-400 on a CPU upgrade on a budget model system?  Only you can decide, but it's a bit like upgrading your Hyundai Accent with a V6 engine - it's still an economy car by design, just a bit faster.

Thank you very much for your fast & helpful reply ejn63.  I know what you mean about not investing much in an old machine but I found this processor on ebay and it looks pretty good value and compatible so I think it might be worth it.

Does this look compatable to you?

Thanks again,

Chris

It'll work, but is it $120 worth of upgrade?  That's your call - mine would be no, it is not.

Now is the time to fully utilize your inspiron 1525 (2014) as cpu prices have become dirt cheap on the 2nd hand market and cheaper ssd's makes your pc run super fast

Yes! That's very true! I have seen the T9500 for less than $50. And the video graphics are, in my opinion, not as bad as people say. For the most part the graphics would be just fine for most of the online games i play such as minecraft. if dell would simply update the the drivers to be more compatible with windows 7! Its dell not microsoft or intel!!! Funny how all my games play great until i put windows 7 on the laptop and then start having opengl problems. Have run win xp, win vista, win server 2008, win server 2012,win 7, win 8, win 8.1 all on this laptop.

I just bought a T9300 for USD$26.60 off eBay, free shipping (Sept-2015). Saw the T9500 for around $75 too.
