USING AN mSATA ON INSPIRON 5720 EITHER AS INTEPENTAND SSD OR AS CHASE DRIVE PROBLEMS ...
Hi after hours on reading some threads here with almost same problems / searching in sites / calling tech support of dell in my country still wasnt able to make it work so here we go..
I opened a thread a week ago here and was asking what msata controler does this laptop have 3G or 6G. A day after i got a replay saying to me that my laptop is 6G msata "compatible".
Yes it works with the 6G msata but the controler is for 3G msata so it caps the 6G msata ssd speeds to half.
That i can say now that i bought a 6G msata ssd (after your confidence that my controler was 6G) and i simply throwed my money for a more advanced technology than my laptop has.
Anyway lets go on with the problems...
-First problem is that even if the msata is recognized in bios and the sata settings are in intel responce not in ahci or ata
in win8 and at intel rapid program there isnt an accelerate button. Also as i saw from pictures in a previus thread in bios under the sata mode selection there isnt something else.
I had the A14 bios and just flashed the A15 (latest) and still same probs. (also in A15 bios i noticed a change that in boot section in bios in the hard disk order inside it has only a name "DISK" when in A14 bios there was instead of this word the full name of my HDD). So any other ideas or sit and w8 for a new bios update?/
-Second problem is the OS Booting from a stand alone msata ssd. i read again in same thread in this forum exept all rest that the 5720 can start from an msata installed OS so even if u was recomented max a msata ssd of 34gb u wasnt saying that bigger capasities will not be able to be handled from the machine
so i bought an adata sx300 64gb to see in first hand the stand alone boot and the chase boot systems in my laptop.
The preinstaled OS disks after starting to instal win 8 on my msata was giving an error and was stoping to install saying to me to contact dell etc etc bla bla bla...
so i used an original win 7 dvd which found my msata ssd and installed windows in it.
all was working fine till i decited to remove the dvd from disk drive when ofcourse the install was over
then i saw that the pc couldnt find the msata path to boot lol/
I puted again my win 7 dvd in drive and restart the pc
when it prompted press any key to boot from cd i just let it pass and here we go the msata boot turned on and i was once more in win7..pff
i went in bios and start trying to figure out what settings could be ok so the motherboard to recognize my msata boot
i tryed EVERYTHING and when i say everything i mean it but nomater what the bios simply could not "see" the msata ssd as an hard disk drive in boot options
the hard disk drive folder in boot options was empty
the msata as i sayed at start is recognized by bios and settings as a stand alone ssd to install the bios was setted at ahci mode but still...
so 2 out of 2 couldnt make it work either as chase or as stand alone OS boot gg.
Conclusion is that u should be more carefoull to your advises about the hardware issues and what it can work or not in spesific machines now about this thread i ask not for more "tricks" on how to do this or that couse i know from pcs too just to keep those "bugs" in mind for future bios updates if they can be solved from in there

I made an exhaustive research of this matter and I can say, that at this time, whith the latest version of BIOS you can not make MSATA SSD disk bootable from BIOS on Dell Inspiron 5720. It can be used only as a cash disk or data disk.
BUT:
There is an option when you CAN boot from SSD disk. And it will really speed up your laptop, but this is the method that we call in Ukraine as "through the ass", sorry for my language.
You can install Windows on your standard hard drive, install all the drivers. Than clone the disk to your SSD drive with Acronis soft or any other. After that you have to edit your Windows Boot Manager by bcdedit.exe tool and make your Windows boot from SSD.
Windows will really boot from SSD, it will boot fast. After that you can install all heavy programs on your SSD and use your laptop with SSD as a boot drive and also have your 1TB disk as data disk.
BUT:
1) you can not delete Windows on your standard hard drive
2) windows will permanently read some data from your standard hard drive.
AFTERWORD
Actually when I bought Dell Inspiron 5720 I already had SATA III SSD Intell 60 GB drive. And first I installed it as a main HDD and at that moment I understood that I would never use standard HDD. Everything worked so fast, the laptop was quite (if you dont use heavy soft and the fan does not work, it is just no sound, cool). Soon I bought Intel MSATA 120 GB as I wanted to have it as boot disk and additionaly use my 1TB HDD which I had when I bought the laptop.
Having spent tow nights I found out the only way how to do it. I did it easyly. It took couple of hours.
BUT:
1) the system still uses standard HDD, which means that you loose your ultimate speed in comparison when you use SSD only
2) after two month of quite practise I understood that HDD noise can annoy
3) battery life became shorter (with SSD only laptop lived 4+ hours (office soft + Internet)
After ONE day of practise I gave up this idea and bought Intell SSD 240 GB, installed it as a main hard drive and also bought 2TB external HDD for heavy data and backup. Now Im just enjoying my laptop.

I too am having this problem. I have installed a Samsung EVO mSATA 500GB drive into the system and the instructions provided by Dell and others is to change the SATA mode from AHCI to RAID. It does not offer me this option, therefore I cannot enable the "Intel Rapid Start" or cache acceleration technology. Has this issue been resolved? I suspect there needs to be a BIOS Fix for this.

My friend as you saw i stopped to write about this matter couse i had no "real" theory or answer from dell.
i fixxed this bug by mistake from pure luck and i can tell u now that it works perfectlly
how?
simply. log into windows from your main hdd as usually
after fo to disk manager and partition your msata into 1 partition 30Gb and leave the rest unpartitioned (blank).
then turn off your pc and take out your main hdd and leave ONLY the msata with the 1 partition 30 gm as i mentioned before
now boot from win instalation cd and install your win into the msata.
by now i forgot to mention that the RAID command should be prompted into your BIOS
after win instalation turn off your pc put bk your main hdd and go to bios to put disks on raid and bott start from your msata
now you are rd thats all pfff. you can partition now the rest 450Gb of your msata and use it as second partition.

with a few words guys " NOMATER WHAT MSATA U USE" for the bios to "see" it it must be 30gb or less else balls. so big msata just partition them to "unlock" bios and install normally the windows and after that do what ever u want.
-ps just saw previus messages in this matter since and i had fixxed this matter a week after my first post and now i was informed by this new reply on this post with this auto system mailling. so sorry for the delay...

Well ... 30GB. Im using Win 7 Pro for 1 year already, and the WINDOWS folder now occupies about 18 GB, plus Program files folder, virtual memory files etc ... it can take up to 3-10 GB.
Of course you can install all HEAVY soft on different disk. And set temporary files disk to different from system for every software, BUT first - it bores, SECOND - it wont save you anyway. Sooner o later you will get short of space.
So Im not really sure you can comfotrtably work with 30GB system disk.
