USB ports non-functional

I have a Inspiron 1150 running XP Home.  A few days ago, my 2 rear USB ports stopped functioning.  At first I thought the mouse had gone bad, but then I realized neither my iPod or Camera are recognized by the computer (I get a USB device not recognized error).  I've tried the following:
- disabled power management at the USB Hub
- restored setup defaults
- uninstalled and then allowed windows to reinstall the root hubs
- ran extended diagnostics with no errors

USB ports have worked flawlessly for 15 months, now nothing,  Can anybody help?

download the latest chipset driver & bios version for your system, if the issue persistes it might be a windows problem and you would have to reinstall the os on the system

I just had the same problem on my Inspiron 9100.
I have 4 USB ports and 2 of them just stopped working. Actually they still work but were not supplying any power, so any device that required power from USB would not be recognized. I have tried all the troubleshooting without any positive results. Had the motherboard replaced today - everything is OK now. Contact Dell support if your pc is under warranty and have the defective part replaced since you have already gone through all the possible TS. You could also run the Dell Diagnostics and see what happens during the USB test.

I've been working with Dell Support for the past 4 nights.  They give me something new to try but at this point, nothing seems to work.  I beleive I am still getting power, when I plug in my iPod, I get a 'USB device not recognized" prompt.  Nothing happens but I can see that the iPod is charging.

When the device is not recognized does it appear in the Device Manager with a yellow question mark next to it? If it does appear there, try double cliking on the device, click on the Driver tab, update driver, and click next to let windows try to install it manually.

Also visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and make sure that you have all the latest updates for your computer.

webzila,

I have run the extended diags and everything passes.  Did your diagnostics fail?

No, my diags passed also and the USB port was actually working because when I plugged in an external HD which is self powered that worked but when I tried a keyboard, mouse, ipod, etc...that wouldnt work.

One way to test it is if you have one of those USB lights, try plugging that in, if the light turns on then it maybe be a windows problem since this device doesnt require any installation at all and only uses the USB as the power source, if they light doesnt turn on at all its definetely a port/hardware issue. I would contact Dell support.

At this point I would check the Windows Update site to make sure that you have all the latest system updates because the default installation that Dell provides is not up to date.

Also, run the USBReady Utility and see what it says:

I haven't looked at the device manager when the iPod is plugged in, but I've played around with the USB hubs when nothing is plugged in (except the mouse which doesn't work).  There are no yellow question marks and I've even tried disabling the device and then allowing windows to reenable it and load the driver.  When I've tried to update the driver, it asks for a disk....I insert one of the windows disks that came with my system but I get an error saying it can't find the driver.

webzila,

I ran that utility and it says my USB hardware, and system software support are operating correctly with no system software upgrade required.  Seems like I have a OS problem and I will be forced to reinstall Windows??

I will give that utility a try later tonight.  Thank you very much for your time and advice.

Before you reinstall open up Internet Explorer, click on Tools and go to Windows Update. Download all of the critical updates. Also pay attention to system and driver updates that could be relevant to your problem.

If that doesnt help you can try repairing windows (reinstalling it over itself).
