Suddenly no speaker sound?

I decided to dust off my old Dell Studio XPS 16 1640 and sell it to a friend in need. I charged it up and checked the computer out, and every worked (including the speakers). I reformatted my laptop (Windows Vista 64bit) then reinstalled the drivers. After all was done, I gave the laptop to him... With malfunctioning speakers. Now I have the laptop back, I reinstalled the drivers, I updated the drivers, I've endlessly searched google for help, I've done everything in my possible knowledge to fix this problem. The headphone jacks work fine, my headphones are able to play music. The computer ignorantly tells me music is playing, even though I hear nothing. The headphone jacks don't seem to be keeping it in "headphone mode". I know the speakers are fine because they were playing before I reformatted my computer back to factory settings. I like to consider myself a pc geek, and well on my own when it comes to technology (I like to build my own pcs) how ever this problem has me lost.

Hi,

If the headphones are working then the the audio card and the drivers are definitely working fine. So it may either be an issue with the sound settings or else the speakers have gone bad. I do understand that the speakers were working good before  reformatting the computer to factory settings.

Please follow the steps below to check the sound settings:

  • Click Start> Control Panel> Sound.
  • Under the Playback tab, highlight the speaker and click on set as default and then apply.
  • You can also right click on the other playback devices like headphone and HDMI and disable it.
  • Also right click on the speaker and run a test to make sure the speaker is working fine.
If the test fails and you still do not get any sound from the speakers, the speakers will need to be replaced.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Please reply for any further questions.

Abhishek_B,  please see the Laptop Audio FAQs that are pinned to the top of the Laptop Audio discussion board, for a possible third reason for the symptoms. One of the FAQs that could provide another perspective is named

"Headphone Jack FAQ -- if you have sound through the headphone jack but not the speakers."

Hello. I cannot tell which one of us you are addressing, but I suggest that you re-stall your audio driver. If that does not help then see the 1st section of the Headphone Jack FAQ.

If you were addressing the Dell employee, I don't think he is around anymore. If you need more help please include the full model name of your laptop and its operating system.
