Standard to Backlit Keyboard Upgrade and Biometrics on Latitude E6400
Hi Everyone!
I recieved a Latitude E6400 from school, which, of course, comes with only standard features. I wanted to upgrade to the backlit keyboard, and have no problems taking the system apart, but was wondering if I needed to order any other parts besides the upgraded keyboard to make it happen.
Also, was wondering if it's even possible to manually add the biometric feature (fingerprint reader) to the latitude.
All advice appreciated! Thanks!

Casey,
For the keyboard you can just buy the backlit keyboard and you will be fine. The DellControl Point software will take care of the back lighting for you. As far as the finger print reader goes. If your system has TPM chip on the motherboard you should be able do upgrade the palmrest. To check for the TPM chip, go into the BIOS and go under security. The Wave software that controls the fingerprint reader can be installed with the DellControl Point software. Its the Security Manager part.

Jeff, I am interested in making the same upgrade. You said:
Which specific ControlPoint component(s) need to be installed? There are 12 different ControlPoint downloads listed for the E6400 under Windows XP, including "drivers", "applications" and "utilities"! I presume I don't need to install all of them...but which one(s) are needed to support the backlit keyboard? Thanks!Jeff2010

You will need to install the DellControl Point Driver and that's really it. It should have driver listed beside it.

I too looked for this information and it is hard to find. If you're like me, you don't want to load any more software than is necessary and there are 12 ControlPoint downloads under XP. The only one you'll need to control the keyboard backlight is ControlPoint System Manager and the file is R230308 for XP and R230307 for Vista. It is listed in the ControlPoint catagory under Dell - Applications. It is the only one of the ControlPoint downloads I installed on an E6400 ATG and I now have full control of the keyboard backlight settings. The Ambient Light Sensor Utility is not necessary in XP but must be installed in Vista to add that functionality. I found the following document helpful from the Dell website. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/rig/reimageA00.pdf Hope this helps!
