Shell Hardware Detection service severely slowing bootups and restarts
I recently started having problems with my Inspiron 9200 booting and shutting down VERY slowly. It would hang once it reached the blue Windows welcome screen. After a minute, it would reach the desktop background image and hang for another 3-5 minutes. One shutdown, it seemed like the computer wouldn't even notice I told it to shut off but after 5 minutes it would shut down.
I talked to several hardware people on the Dell chat and they helped me isolate the problem but could find a way to fix it except to shut it off. The problem is the service in msconfig called Shell Hardware Detection by Microsoft. It controls the autoplay function of the PC. I currently have the service disabled. I have to enable it to use my external flash drive and DVD drive.
I would like to know if there is a way I can fix this service where I can use it. I can't reinstall Windows because Dell shipped the wrong disc with my PC. I have Windows Professional and was shipped Windows Home. My only other alternative is to use Dell's backup to restore to factory settings.
Please help me, and thanks in advance.
