Serial port/usb for palm

I posted the below question on the wrong board:

The selected COM1 is not available at this time, Hotsync manager will open the port when it becomes available.  Apparently this port is continous active and under my device manager(ports are not listed.)  I'm using a usb serial connector, (I do not have the cd installation for this cable) , is it possible that a usb cd software would create another port?  IS there a way to create another port?

Below is a response:
Re: My PlamVX won't connect to my new Dell Ispiron 6000, no connection available

-----------------

You should configure the hotsync utility to use a USB rather than serial port.

When you post back, please post in the Inspiron general hardware forum.

Good luck.

Could someone tell me exactly how to configure the hotsync utility to use the usb?

Thanks

Which is it? Are you using a USB cradle or a serial cradle?

I'm using a serial cradle with a usb connector on the cradle.

Ok thanks,
I didn't know that palm.com give you the option to put in the serial from the device. I'm off to search the palm site for this option.  Once again thanks so much, my fingers are crossed.

I'll let you know how it goes,

Since the 6000 doesn't have a serial port, we'll assume it's USB.

Reinstall the Palm Desktop software (you can download it from Palm using your serial number from the device) and choose USB connection.

Ok, I've uninstalled the software to restall it, where is the option for choosing a usb connection?  I can't seem to see/find this option?

You're quite confused.

You say when you go into Hotsync you get an error message?  Or AFTER you've played in Hotsynch you get the message?

Your issue is that you have setup Hotsynch to use the serial port, Com1, but you don't have this port on your computer.  So, it will NEVER work.  Right click on the Hotsync icon on your taskbar and make sure Local USB is checked, and Local Serial is NOT checked.

This is exactly what I have done:

First I downloaded the palm software from:
Then I connected my palmvx to my pc, it will not connect.
So someone told me to go in under hotsync setup, and go to local(of which there is where I get the message about the port(in my previous post)

I haven't been given a option of setting up or choosing anytype of port, I've just simply downloaded the XP palm download.  I however have right clicked on the hotsync and verified that the local  usb is checked, but my palm is still not able to connect.

Oh, lol you are correct in that I am confused I'm having so many problems with this especially since it only took me seconds to setup my palm on my 98 in the pass.
I really do appreciate all The help I'm getting from this board for I do realize that you guys are not on dell's payroll.

Thanks again

Oh I don't know if this matter but I am using the palmconnect usb,  the one at this site:

http://www.palm.com/us/support/accessories/usb/palmusb.html but I no longer have the original software, I tried to download it but my computer reads that the file is corupted.

Thanks again you are very helpful

Yes, it matters.  Without those drivers you can't get it to work.

Verify that NOTHING else is checked besides USB, and if it is uncheck it.

This is what I've been thinking.

Do you know of a place or site where I can get this download besides the palm site or purchase for a reasonable price  (cd-software)?

Thanks for alll of your time and patience
