No power from battery or AC adapter

Hello--

I have a Inspirion 6000 that I have had for a little less than 2 years (NOT under warranty anymore).  About 2 months ago I could not power up my computer and it appeared to be the AC adapter.  I borrowed a friends and was able to run my computer for a week, while I waited for my replacement adapter.  I have had the replacement for 2 months.

My computer will not power up, with or without the battery.  It worked all day yesterday and was on over night and when I woke up I cannot get it to turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged into the wall the power light on the AC adapter is on.  The minute I plug it into the computer the light goes out.  Any help would be great...solutions for the least expensive fix would be appreciated!

The system board is faulty. It may just be the power jack, or it may be the board itself. If just the jack, a shop may be able to solder in a new one for $100-150. Otherwise, the board will need to be replaced - more like $300+ labor.

The power light on the AC adapter now stays on while it is plugged in.  However when I go to power up my laptop, it starts, lights come one, but the screen stays black.  Any advice?

If you can get a display on an external monitor (i.e., the system is running), there is a chance it's just a failed backlight. From the other symptoms, it's a failed system board.

I am having the same exact problem, it started yesterday. I have had my Inspiron 6000 about 15 months now..was also a part of the battery recall. Now my ac adaptor does not seem to be recognized by my laptop. Most of the time I use the ac adaptor to power my laptop. My laptop started shutting off, black screen , no power even though I was plugged in to a outlet. I like my laptop because of the portability. Daytime, in my living room, then some nights I just unplug it, carry it into my bedroom, plug it in and continue with whatever I was working on. Yesterday morning, after this routine,my inspiron shut down, no battery, no ac power. Right now the only thing that seems to be working for me to get my ac power back is to unplug the adaptor, take out the battery, then plug in the adaptor and replace the battery. What is going on. I am getting very dissappointed with Dell.

That sounds exactly like the problem I started having.  I even bought a new AC adapter, thinking that was the problem.  I took my computer to be looked at and was told it was my motherboard.  Replacing it (with labor) will cost between $700 and $800.  I am opting to buy a new computer instead.  And I will be buying anything but a Dell.  I have a Compaq that has lasted 6 years and my Dell laptop can't even last me two years?  Dell's are inexpensive for a reason...they are cheaply made!

The price you were quoted is ridiculous - boards aren't cheap, but even with labor the cost to replace should not be more than $400-500. Whatever you buy next, get a 3-year warranty minimum. Dells are no more or less likely to fail than other brands on average -- in fact, they're better than some others (HP-Compaq is the worst for reliability at the moment). Most notebooks are made by just two companies - the same two that supply most of Dell's notebooks, also supply HP, Compaq, Gateway, Apple, Toshiba, Sony and a host of others.

Hi Pals, I also have the same problem relating to the adapter. A few days ago I tried to recharge the power of my Inspiron E-1505, but the LED of the adapter was not on. I have not checked the condition of the adapter but I am sure that the battery is still working fine because before I recharged the power, my wife and son were able to play games without plugging the adapter to the wall-outlet. The problem is, if the power adapter is damaged, I can not get the substitute here in my country (Indonesia) because the Dell regional does not serve any parts or service for Dell Inspiron with any model. They just serve Dell Latitude. I just want to know whether the Latitude Adapter also uses the same adapter with Dell Inspiron or not (PA-10 or PA-12). If yes, maybe I can get it without order it across the country with the expensive shipping & handling cost. I appreciate for any suggestions and thanks a lot..

Well, add me to the list of people who have had this happen.  My D600 just went dead this morning.  It was plugged in and running last night, then, I open it up later on and...nothing.  Completely dead.  No sign of life whatsoever--from the power cord and/or the battery.  It won't hit any power at all--nothing flahes or lights up at all, much less a boot attempt.  My laptop was working just fine prior to this--no warning of any doom to come.

Bad motherboard, then?  What would make it go kaput all at once, and so completely?  Could it be a damaged power receptacle?  The green light on the power cord is lit, but then goes out when I plug the other end into the laptop.

Go Dell!  Looks like a common thing maybe.  I know things wear out and problems arise, but this Dell replaced a much older laptop (Toshiba) that still works fine.  I have not been impressed at all with Dell, and I have been surrounded by them the past few years.  I would never buy another Dell product.

I found my receipt for my dell inspiron 6000, it was 13 months old, I for one am now done with Dell.  I  brought a hp dv6265us from circuit city.  Seems as if many people are having problems with dell notebooks related to power adaptors /motherboards and batteries.  My biggest mistake was not sending my laptop back immediately, I had it about 12 hours when the screen went blue and said  critical errors.  I called there tech support line, on hold for a long time before a tech answered my call.  Nightmare of a phone call due to a language barrier.  I had to 'dump " the entire computer and then do a recovery.  A few weeks later I found out that 2 of my friends purchased the dell inspiron and sent it back to dell within 30 days for a refund due to the very same problem.  Just pass the word to your friends and colleagues...no more dells.  I have.

After I experienced the power adapter problem for Dell, and also read all complains described here, I think that Dell needs to fix this power problem. My Powerbook G3 from Apple has more reliable adapter than my Inspiron. It can survive almost 7 years since I bought in 98 until the adapter dead in 2005. This problem might be happened to all Dell owners and I start thinking that I invested my money in useless notebook. Even though my problem is solved right now after I bought the new adapter (PA-12 family) for $28 (is it a fair or cheap price??), I am still worried this issue will happen again in very short period from now. Thats why TOSHIBA is still the most wanted notebook in my country compared with Dell.

I was hoping some one could help direct me.  I have an Inspiron 6000.  The powersource wire was freyed and not working, and now the laptop won't turn on -- even with another power source.  Is there hope for my hard drive -- or is there a high probability that is zapped too.

Please advise. thanks.
