New laptop: battery died, won't recognize charger

I bought an Inspiron 1110 in the beginning of June. Last Thursday, I was over at my girlfriend's place and didn't have my AC adapter with me since the battery lasts 7 hours. The battery ran out of juice and my laptop went into hibernation, but I had to save everything I had open so I rebooted. Right after saving, it shutdown instantly.

When I got a hold of my AC adapter, I plugged it in for 8 hours and it didn't charge at all. The light was on and everything. I was able to boot with the battery, but when I plug in the AC Adapter, it shuts down. If I have the AC adapter plugged in beforehand, it closes after 10 seconds. I had the computer booted onto the desktop , then plugged in the adapter, and it shutdown instantly.

I know the AC adapter isn't damaged because my girlfriend has an Inspiron 1525 that uses the same one, and it works on her laptop no problem. Inconveniently, her AC adapter stopped working the same day, so she's using mine right now.

After the computer instantly shuts down, the light won't go on anymore and I can't start it with just the battery in. I have to take out the battery and wait 5 minutes. At that moment, when I plug in the AC adapter, I hear a constant ticking in the laptop. I took it apart and took out the HDD to rule out the fact that it might be what's ticking, but I still hear it.

What can I do to fix such a problem? I don't want to have to call, cause I've always had problems with them...

Thanks.

Hi mate, I know you have stated you don't want to call tech support but it's brand new and it sounds like you have major problem, Yes tech support is rubbish and they will probably make you reinstall or some other bull but you need to get onto them. its in the warranty period and sounds like there is a hardware failure.

Call them they are useless but at least they will fix it for free, unless you bought it in a store in which case take it back and get it replaced.

Remove the battery and unplug the system.  Then hold the power button for 30 seconds.  Plug it back in again -- can you then boot the system?

No, I can not.

If you paid for the in-home service, yes.  The basic warranty is return-for-repair.  If you want it repaired in your home or office, you'll need to purchase a warranty upgrade.

The problem is, I don't want to have to mail it in and wait two to three weeks before I get it back. It shouldn't be so faulty to begin with. Do they offer at-home repair?

Thanks.

That's pathetic. I shouldn't have to pay extra for a faulty computer. Thanks anyway.

If you want the type of service where a car dealership comes and picks up your car when it needs service, then you buy a Lexus.  If you want to save money, you buy a Toyota, and drive the car yourself -- simple as that.  In other words, you get what you pay for.

As another person has replied, call Tech support. Reason is simple; there is nothing you can do that won't cost you more than the time spent on the phone talking to someone you cannot understand. If you know the AC adapter is working correctly, than it is most likely a system board issue as that is what the battery connector is directly connected too.
