My external headset microphone will not work

I have a turtle beach 4pc headset and i'm trying to use it on my Dell Inspiron 1545. It does not have a headset port, but has both headphone and microphone jacks. I bought a converter for that. The speaker on the headset is working just fine, but i cannot get the microphone to work. I've tried enabling the Microphone / line in device and it doesn't work. someone help me get this to work please.

Hello. Open the Recording tab of the Sound properties if you have Vista or Win 7.

Look for the words "IDT High Definition Codec" -- that means your IDT driver is installed. If you only see "High Definition Audio Device" then go to the Inspiron 1545 downloads page, select your operating system, and get your IDT audio driver and install it.

Right click on Mic/line-in and set as the default recording device. Right click on mic/line-in and click Properties, then the Levels tab. Set the level and the mic boost.

Go to Control panel>View by icons>IDT Audio Control Panel, and see if there is an option to allow popups. If so, check it. Plug in the mic and then select mic as the jack configuration

Test by using Windows Sound Recorder. If the mic still does not work then try re-installing the IDT audio driver. If still no luck you can test the jack by trying a different mic. You can test your headset & adapter on a different computer.

We truly regret the inconvenience that has been caused to you. You should consider updating the audio drivers on the system. Let us know the version of windows installed so we can provide you with the direct link.

Ensure there are no issues with the headphones kindly connect a different headphone with a mic to check with the system. Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

The forum is open to anybody and all ideas are welcome, but if you don't have anything new to add it is bad forum etiquette to just repeat what I have already said. You have done this a couple of times in the past too so I guess you don't know it is considered bad form.

I have the same issue but an running Windows 8 on an Inspiron 15 5000 series.  Please send me links and directions regarding how to enable my mic from my headset.  Thanks

Hello. As far as I can determine, that is an Inspiron 15 5547 model. If that is correct, first make sure your Realtek audio driver is installed. It looks like Dell only supports windows 8.1 for that model, however you should be able to obtain a windows 8 audio driver directly from the Realtek web site.

Other than that, it looks like the Inspiron 15 5547 model has a combo jack. That kind of jack supports a headset with a single plug for both the headphones and the built-in mic. It is a TRRS plug with 4 segments. If that is the type of headset you have, plug it in and the open the Recording tab of the Sound properties and set the mic to be the default recording device. I think I put in screen shots earlier in this thread.
